Basic Advice For A Newbie Furniture Buyer

Hi guys! I'm moving into a new apartment soon and I want to start over with all my furniture. I prefer a minimalistic vibe, so I won't be buying a lot of items. I want to start with a bed, a mattress, a dining table with some chairs, a leather sofa, some bedstands and other minor things, and a DVD/TV projector. I'm obviously going to do some research before buying anything and I'd appreciate some help on major basic starting points in terms of quality, pricing, what stores to look at and anything else that may be important. In other words, please help with any useful tips you have from your own experiences buying new furniture. I'm sort of on a budget, I'd prefer to spend around 5K to 8K for the whole 1BR apartment. I live in Los Angeles. I prefer quality for a reasonable price but I'd rather pay 2x the amount for a wooden item than get a cheaper plastic version. Thanks!

Might want to check out my condo thread I started...People have posted some good suggestions there. I'd definitely check out allmodern.com as well.
