New to style, in college, what are the essential items of clothing.

I'm a freshman in college and I'm trying to get into men style. I have looked a little bit on GQ, but everything is crazy expensive. As you know by the title, I'm a college student, and that means that I have a tight budget. Here are the two questions I have:

1. What are the essential items in a wardrobe? (act like I have nothing)


2. Where can I get cheap, fashionable clothing? (so far I noticed many people shop at thrift shops and Goodwill stores)
