What mystifies me is the idea that if you have friends who are too broke to throw down for a society wedding or uninterested in the trappings of same, you should hold out on their gift compared to what you could spend.

so you are only invited to weddings of friends? you are nto invited to weddings of people you reeally do not see whether they be business aquaintances or first cousins you probabably have seen once or twice in your life?

but another interesting poit of thsi you show willing to move up on cost depending on level of the party, but not down... can you give reason for that? honeslty if 150 usd is good enoug for one wedding party is should be good enough for any weeding party at least based upon your previous posts.

Just take cues from the wedding scene in Goodfellas with those overstuffed envelopes of cash.

No, I don't go to weddings of business acquaintances or distant family. I'm not flying to Virginia or Alabama for the wedding of someone I may have met once when I was a child.

Yes - if $150 is what you can give as a gift and is what you find appropriate, then the cost of the reception is irrelevant. I understand people with means wishing to cover their plate - but I do not understand offering less because you feel under-served.

We have been to so many wedding recently. Seems like 50-100 per couple for the 'young friends' and 100+ for the 'adults'. Gifts excepted. I am trying to convince the fiance to register for nothing, so we can get more cash gifts thinking they will be for more money.

Unless you specifically ask for money, this technique is going to get you shitty gifts you'd never use. Mostly likely they will be cheap too.

My now wife and I registered for a few things, all at the price level that seemed appropriate to us. Even so, some people gave us shitty gifts, or nothing.

You could be missing the experience of a lifetime.

About 20 years back ... I attended a family wedding in Virginia. The wedding was on a Saturday ... but the celebration began on Thursday evening with a tent party for about 500 guests. The next day there was a luncheon at the country club ... then a Friday evening party that rivaled that of Thursday evening ... but with a greatly expended guest list. On Saturday there was a luncheon for out of town guests ... then that evening the wedding an one beautiful reception.
