What's the going rate for wedding gifts?

250 seems reasonable. Am I right?

I suppose it depends on your salary and whether you have mouths to feed of your own. $100 for friends you're friends enough with to get invited. $150-$200 for good family friend. But if i have to travel via plane and pay for hotels etc., $100 is good, even for a good family friend. Family would get more depending on my mood. One summer I had about 8 friends get married (and the GF had about 5 or so). No way in hell I'm doing $250 for each one. Either that or I'm totally cheap.

$250 is reasonable.

$150-200-ish is what we spend if they are closely related or daily acquaintances, it drops the further out we go.

Yes. $250 seems reasonable. If it's someone you're very close to I think it's acceptable to spend more

It depends upon how well you know the person ... and your own financial abilities.

Add into the equation where the wedding is held. If in the local fire hall, with a keg of Genesee Beer, with a crock pot of pigs in the blankets, and 300 people stuffed into a room made for 100, then $25 might do. Way I look at it is, regardless of friend or relative, if the couple doesn't put effort into the wedding, why spend a lot on the gift? In the past year, I have given amounts ranging from $100 to $500.

You're gonna be fine at $250.

i hate wedding gifts. i would like to give 0 if possible. i don't want jack shit at my wedding. just show up, dance, have a drink, and leave. i don't want you to buy me some shitty plateware set from macy's.

I think the giving of gifts at a wedding is a tacky tradition.

best ever was when my mother in law borrowed 2k from me week before brother in law's wedding for her car. then she gave it to him for his wedding. then, she called me cheap for giving him 250.

You lent money to your mother in law? Yikes

For my most recent friends' wedding, I got them a Hermes tea set. The one before that, a set of tupperware. Point is, choose your friends and gifts accordingly.

250? My reaction is you must be in some high class NYC circle. That seems high unless you are trying to be on the high side.
