Interesting selection. I stayed there 20 years ago when it was named "Le Grand Hotel de Principautes Unies," but it was not so grand at all. The low quality muslim sheets were unbelievably scratchy. I walked by two years ago and it looks rather lovely now. They still have a sign posted around the side saying that Faulkner wrote one of his first novels there, when it was an apartment building.

Le Grand Hotel is quite nice, if you like the classical style. Lots of carpets, and the rooms are a bit dark.

However, it is most certainly a nice place to stay. The rooms start at approx. 480 Euro.

I definitely prefer a more modern, "italian" style, e.g. like http://www.hotelderussie.it/suites.html
Unfortunately, the rooms there are even more expensive - and I do not know a Rocco Forte Hotel in Paris (which makes my last paragraph a bit OT, but it´s good we talked about it )

For decadence, the former D'Alsace pension house, now called L'Hotel is suitable. I don't know if the wallpaper is still tacky or not.

Check the Hotel Buci-Latin --AMAZING and well within budget-

I am sitting in the Hotel Lutetia, which I like very much, as I respond. I would recommend it. I prefer the Relais Christine, but I was too late in reserving this time. The d'Aubuisson is also nice and is in the same area.

Because after 6 nights in Paris we are off to London for 4 nights. We are staying at Claridges there. That is quite a splurge for us.
