do a search around and read some specific threads: 1. I KNOW there's a thread just like this where some guy asks for the wardrobe basics and somebody literally lists out good starting clothes. Search around, you'll find a thread with exactly that somewhere. 2. Ultimate Noob thread / recomend me X in my wardrobe 3. the various "shopping in Toronto" threads... do a search for the titles since this has been discussed MANY times. Also, there's a shared google map of toronto stores. Do a search since I've posted it a few times. 4. and also start looking at many many pictures of the waht are you wearing thread and you'll start to get a sense for various types of fits and the standard pieces of clothing almost everyone has. edits retail map - http://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?hl=en&...d1b0612958&z=3 Example help a noob rebuild thread - http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=96080, http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=197230, http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=201077, http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=204257 (ignore the pics), http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=68913, http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=48241, http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=29340 - ie young padiwan, you are not the first... learn from the mistakes of others, you don't have enough time and money to make them all yourself. ultimate noob thread - http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=107280

I've just looked over Club Monaco's collections, and it is exactly what I have been looking for. Those types of clothes seem impossible to find at the mall near my own home! My style is definitely dressy, and I'll definitely take all this advice into account before buying new clothes.

Fuck, good to know my suit won't shrink when I run it through the wash.

Club Monaco? Really? I found their quality rather dodgy. It's not too much different from Zara (which got no mention here) or H&M. Not quite down there with Mexx or Tristan or something.

BR and Zara have a lot of end of season sales where the discounts can go pretty steep but you have to go there for sizes. The websites are pretty much rubbish - you have to pick the big stores (Eaton Centre, Yorkville) to get a good look at menswear if that's what you're interested. And you can't tell fabric without touching it.

I'd advise against going to a place like Harry's, Holt's or even Tom's Place or the West End Shop in The Bay until you know a little more of what you like and how you like it. Otherwise you'll just get convinced to buy a whole lot of Hugo Boss stuff.

The service there operates rather like a machine. I saw a young man, probably not more than 20, get tailored there by the sales associate and all he did was hem the pants a little and told him he looked great. Needless to say, much more alterations were in order and the jacket selected was the wrong shoulder size.

+1 for club monaco. quality is better than it was when i was in my early 20s

could also check out the harry rosen outlet in heartland sauga or holt renfrew outlet in vaughan mills

Just wondering what the Harry Rosen outlet carries (i.e. brands)? I live really close to that but havent ever really gone there.
