I had gotten a ring a few weeks earlier. She wanted a surprise (within a certain framework), so I picked it all out on my own. Worked out well in the end, apparently I have decent taste in jewelry.
Actual proposal, we went to a local park near a river. She insisted we bring the dog, a complication! Ended up playing with said dog in the river, entirely forgetting that I had a really expensive ring squirreled away in my pocket. We went on a little hike along the river, found a nice spot and I suggested we stop there for awhile. It seemed nice and out of the way, but some dumbass on a cell phone just camped out about 20 feet away from us for a seeming eternity. I had to creatively stall, and finally did the ol' one-knee, pop the question routine.
She thought it was a joke. Initial response "You don't even have a ring!" I responded by pulling out said ring, and she proceeded to say "Holy shit" about 500 times, before saying "Of course yes," before continuing with the profanity.
It was fun. I was nervous, worst part was calling up her dad beforehand. They live 600 miles away or I'd have asked in person, I knew he'd say yes, was no question about that, just a respect thing.
