NYC with the family - week of XMas

I'm planning a 2-3 day trip to the city the week of Christmas with my wife and 4 year old. We'll be staying in mid-town for proximity to FAO, American Girl, etc. Any suggestions for shows, dinner and other holiday 'must see or do' for a 4 year old girl? She loves Sound of Music so we may get tickets for a show, but we'll be winging it for the most part so, recommendations are appreciated.

A quick stop at the Central Park Zoo to see the sea lions feeding, check out the snow leopards and polar bears is always fun for the little ones and surprisingly convenient.

FAO!! I think its even open Christmas Day. Rockefeller Center for ice skating, carriage ride in Central Park, the "Stars" at Time Warner Center, that seems like a good start.

Whenever family visits, I usually sent them over to Bryant Park for some evening strolling and it's always well received with their Holiday setup. I haven't been in 5-6 years, but I recall liking it.

Bryant Park is a good recommendation. Skating is free there (still have to rent skates) and bigger than Rock Center. There's also a big winter market.

Its not quite the same NYC experience though and its a lot more crowded, especially for a 4 year old. The winter market is fun though.

I think Wollman Rink is the best option for skating. And if you check out the CP Zoo be sure to time it so that you pass the Delacorte Clock on the half hour. I would also recommend the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Look online for discount tickets. http://www.radiocitychristmas.com/lefty

It's out of the way, but the Cloisters, a Met outpost up in Fort Tryon park is well worth a visit. They will have some type of Christmas program. I think you can get a bus there pretty easily....
