Nigel Cabourn - Page 140

I could do with some help from you guys if possible. I've been after a cameraman for a little while but at the moment I have a more pressing need for a jacket to keep the rain off while wearing a suit to work. I was just wondering if any of you guys think one of the the spring/summer cameraman jackets, I was thinking the yellow one from this summer, would be suitable for the job? Would it be long enough to cover a suit jacket or would it just look ridiculous?

I don't think that will go well with a suit. The king George, cold weather parka or ventile parka are better bets

Yeah, I was thinking it might look too casual. I'm just looking for something fairly lightweight to keep the rain off. I know Corniche have a King George in my size going pretty cheap so I'll have a look at that the next time I'm in Edinburgh but I think it may be too heavy for what I want at the moment.

Cheers

One more question to the Mallory jacket.

The only info I could find on the lining is 100% cotton. While that is definitely so for the body for the sleeves I'm not so sure.

Does anyone know which material the sleeves are lined with?

My take, for the most part nothing by Cabourn works with a suit.  Sure I woudn't do a Cameraman generally with a suit, but I really wouldn't do a King George either.  Maybe the solid navy King George, but I think you're still limited in what you can pair it with and good luck finding one.  Didn't even know they ever made it until the other day.  And the King George looks similar in a lot of ways to the Cameraman.  Only piece I can really see with a suit is a Mallory, and I think you're limited what you can pair it with.  At the end of the day a nice topcoat or trench is what you I would look at for most suits.

As for the raw yellow Cameraman, I'll say yet again that it's my favorite Cabourn piece.  I've tried it on many times, but I have yet to actually wear it.  I've been wearing my green Harris Tweed Cameraman this Fall and while it's nice enough, I much prefer my raw yellow Cameraman.  Depending on your suits and depending on the industry you're in, I could see the raw yellow Cameraman with a linen suit or chino suiting.  One of the advantages of the Cameraman is that you have the adjustable clasps as well which can help you take it in.  I say that because you may need/want to go up a size if you're going to wear a suit/blazer underneath.  Speaking of the raw yellow Cameraman, saw a size 48 on eBay the other day.  It was "buy it now" or make an offer.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll probably end up grabbing the cameraman at some point (currently watching two in my size and will grab one if the other sells) but will look for something else for work. Was just hoping that I might be able to save some money although somehow I went in to town yesterday to pick up some socks and ended up coming back with a new Gitman from Dover Street Market and a knitted tie from Drake's, as I keep seeing jackets that I want this winter but nothing really particularly formal. I think I posted previously that I'd really love a Mallory this winter as I think that's one of the classic Cabourn pieces and I'd love a WW1 Great Coat if I can find one in my size but I also discovered Engineered Garments in Liberty this year and they have some really nice pieces as well. Decisions, decisions.

Interesting that you think the King George is probably the best Cabourn piece London. It shows how different everybody's tastes are as I've seen it in the shop a few times and generally don't even look at it whereas the two Cabourn jackets I have, I bought straight away I think. Was certainly the case with the first jacket I bought which I think is called a Rifleman (a beige/cream jacket with tons of pockets on it, can anyone confirm that? Will post pics if anyone is interested as I don't think I've seen it in this thread before), which was one of those days around 3 years ago where I discovered both the brand and a really cool shop in my hometown that I didn't know existed before.

yeah. I have a whole closet full of jackets from Cabourn and otherwise, and my King George jacket saw a ton of usage through last Fall/winter.

About the King George, is there anyone that could provide me with the actual size of the pit to pit and belly area on a SZ52 coat?
I think I'm going to regret not having purchased one of those King George's. I wonder why they arn't more popular? Seeming everyplace that stocks NC has the Camera Jacket but I've only seen the King George once and even then it's a limited run. I think that Army Green was this year limited run (or was it a red?). It seems that the Black/Brown and the Military are every year with only one or two other colors being limited offerings.

Have you tried emailing Corniche, they have a 52 from last winter for sale that I mentioned earlier http://corniche.org.uk/display1.php?Nigel%20Cabourn%20Coat%20King%20George%20Coat%20Mackintosh%20and%20recycled%20wool

I will amend my other post a bit and say the wool of the King George looks a bit more refined than that of the Cameraman.  IMO that makes it a bit "dressier" for pairing with suits, yet the colorway and overall style is IMO not as appropriate as a top coat or trench.

I'd definitely be interested in seeing that Rifleman.

I don't think they do a King George every year like they do the Cameraman though.  Do they?  I'm under the impression it was a one-time deal.

the jackets I mentioned are the closest, but NC really isn't for wearing with suits. Just buy a nice trench or top coat and be done with it.
