Pleats on velvet pants simply don't look right to me. Is that a crime?

I have a purple velvet Versace suit I bought at outlet last year and got some occasional use out the jacket. I never wore the trousers because they were too tight, but I tried them on recently and they now fit (just about!)

So I'm going to get them hemmed at some point. Not sure what to wear them with though. I don't think I could wear the whole suit as an ensemble, but I wonder what people might recommend combining with purple velvet, slim-fitting trousers. I'm at a loss! I guess I could just restrict myself to wearing the whole suit, but it might look a bit Austin Powers!
