You think it's more likely that someone stole from him instead of mixing up the receipts and tickets when punching them back into micros?

I had the opposite happen to me...I was lazy and wrote a total with tip on the paper (but didn't actually write out the difference on the tip line) and signed and left... but upon review of my CC transactions they never charged me for the total with tip... just the food and drink charges... I'm paranoid that they might have a policy that if there isn't an actual amount written on the tip line that they can't charge it... it was like a 25% tip too... that waitress was fucking hot too... i was eating with my wife but both times my wife had to get up from the table (bathroom and an important cell phone call) that waitress would come by and talk to me... should i call the restaurant and clear it up? it was back in washington DC so I won't be going back there anytime soon...

That would be my guess. Never happened to me because i'm pretty careful about doing the line thing thru the tip area and writing in the total amount but I know several people it's happened too.

Honestly I don't think most people check their CC card / bank statement close enough to catch a smallish over charge like that.

Simple solution as the OP calles for TAKEOUT. Next time, bring it up and get $4 off. Esp if you are a regular customer...

Which pissed me off, because the whole point was to rub it in the face of the assholes who overcharged me.

You think your CC took the hit? WRONG BIG BONG!

Sorry I am so bored at work -- I had to goto a lecture at work the other day which explained credit card processing, so I'll elucidate here for everyone's general knowledge.

Basically there are 3 actors in a CC transaction: (1) Card issuing bank, (2) CC Company, and (3) Vendor bank (i.e., the bank that supplies the business w/credit card machines).

When you dispute a charge your bank (1) says FUCK YOU to Visa/MC (2), and then that is settled. Then, (2) says tells (3) that the amount has been deducted and thus (3) will be receiving less money than expected. (3) then says OH NOOOOOOOOO, and then deducts the amount from the amount owed to the club/business.

It's all very interesting.
