Enough said. El Jack, exactly. And that is my experience, too. And if I've said enough, then I've already said too much.
Apparently this topic did, indeed, make someone angry. :P

I bet you're really jealous of his incredible taste in luxury cars and watches and how independant of everyone else he is. Dude is a fucking yuppie lawyer and you'd think he built an empire in some deserted jungle.

He lives in Canada. How bad can he be?

So why pay the cost and go through all the effort? Because craftsmanship counts. Because everything in today's society from marriage, to cars to electronics to morals are disposable.

I want shoes that took a master craftsman years to learn how to make. I want shoes that are made using techniques that haven't changed in a hundred years. I want them because they are a rejection of everything that is cheap and disposable. I want them because I want to support people who earn their living by making things that endure. But most of all I want them because they are absolutely gorgeous. Have you seen what they sell at Aldo...shoes for Frankenstein's monster.

I'm down with this. I absolutely agree--that's why I saved for years to buy a hand-made steel bicycle frame, that's why I scoured eBay for months to find a NIB Hamilton military watch made of steel rather than thermoplastic.

I'd also add that one reason we (I) have tried to succeed in my career is PRECISELY so my family can have a nicer home; so my wife, kids and I can have nicer clothes and toys; and so we can eat better food (organic, local, farmers market).

Doing all that makes me feel good about money...which frankly can make you feel awfully dirty about earning it, having it and spending it.

Oh, no, you're not judmental. No chip there. Dude, some people are born into it and you're obviously not. Got a serious hate on for lawyers (keep the system running, I presume). See from your other posts you got a hate on for business also. I see. Get over it. Seriously.

Back to the question, people.

I think it depends on what people do for a living. Those in the public eye need to look the part and are entitled to it.

I like nice stuff also but my wife thinks I should draw a line. She thinks 300 is enough for shoes because it's what she does. She buys 3 to my 1, though. I'm also lucky to have a fairly ordinary body shape and RTW works for me. I can understand and appreciate many people prefer made to order, though. Others simply need it. Think it all boils down to what people do for a living and where they draw the line. If you like it, why not. If you can support local artisans and crafters, better.

Oh, and I'd like a porsche also. Hardly need my neighbor's permission but Wife won't let me have one because we've children. Hard to justify that one in the circumstances.

This thread makes me so angry I have to post in it and vent my anger. The OPs question doesn't even deserve a response, and now we are on page 7 or 8, and there are people throwing around accusations of petit bourgeois behavior and neo marxist ideology.

And I just learned a word again; this forum is great. Has the mulling resulted in anything yet?

Alas, this thread doesn't warrant careful consideration.
