To follow the shark catch at this rate, soon there will not be another site to view sharks than in the aquarium ...

should not someone do something, as happened with the whales to avoid it?

Sharks are so fucking cool, it's really a shame how much we've fucked up the ocean. It's easy to forget since we don't live in it. The ocean is in a worse state than our land habit.

Sharks are extremely important to the food chain and biodiversity in the oceans, and their disappearance would be an ecological disaster. Few laypeople realize as much, and unfortunately, sharks aren't cute and cuddly enough to make the hippie activists' list of animals worth fighting for. Nor would your average, apathetic citizen even consider the disappearance of sharks to be a problem. Your average American, if polled, would probably draw some facile conclusion along the lines of "No more sharks means no more shark attacks! That's a good thing!"

no more sharks means no more shark attacks. i don't see the problem here.

No more sharks means no more shark fin, means no more chinese medicine, means 1.3 billion dead chinese overnight. Hmm...

The earth is undergoing a sixth mass extinction phase due to human activity, the first since 65 million years ago. The oceans need to be clear of fishing for a recovery period. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...1020171454.htm

False.

I need to stop eating sushi...

I remember I used to eat whale when I was kid.
It's not tasty at all but it was popular for elderly.
Whole industry (this case fish) and sub-industry (like ship maker) relies on fishing, thus difficult to stop this happening.

Unfortunately for sharks, they are not cute like whales and dolphin.

I suggest feeding dolphins to the sharks to avoid their imminent extinction.

What do you find more cute about whales/dolphins and what are you doing to help save the sharks?

Or humans can stop destroying the ocean and we can let them live without human impact.

I'm not going to do anything to save the sharks. Personally I eat shark the most often, next whale occasionally, but I've never had dolphin. To me dolphin are the cutest, but that's not why I don't eat them.

My view on whales/dolphin/sharks, is that it is a commercial fishing problem, and not an issue of what is right or wrong to eat. There should be more commercial fishing regulation (worldwide) to protect the resources, even if it means higher prices for the consumer.

+1. Sorry, Japan.

So it's wrong for commercial fishers to hunt whale/shark/dolphin but it is ok/not wrong for you to support this by buying it? Those commercial fishermen depend on you ordering shark, so to say that you aren't part of the problem in ordering it is like saying that the smokers aren't to blame for the smoking industry. Without you (and everyone else that eats shark) there would be no shark industry.

I don't get your point. What's wrong with the smoking industry? I enjoy eating shark/whale, so it is in my interest that the fishermen do not kill them to extinction. My view is that wild food resources should be used more responsibly. That means more regulation and perhaps higher prices. It does not mean that you or I should stop eating something, because somehow it has become morally wrong. Morality of what is right or wrong to eat is not the issue. If anything, the anti-whaling movement has shown that regulating/limiting fishing works very well. I think that model should be applied to all wild resources, like tuna, salmon, etc.
