Over the years I have had a surprisingly terrible time finding Italian restaurants that I liked in NY. I finally scored during the last trip with Campagnola Restaurant on 1st Ave. It seemed to have a fair number of wise-guys there, but the food was great. Best steak of my life (for $97.75 for two it should have been), but everything else was wonderful too. The freebie plate of sausages and cheeses was fantastic.
Prior to it, Trattoria del Arte was the only place in NY that I really liked. I have either hated or not been impressed by some alleged greats, including Esca, Felidia, L' Impero, San Domenico, Remi, Scalinatella, and Scalini Feldi. I was also very impressed this trip by Fiammia Osteria, but it seemed more French than Italian in cooking methods.
I am still kicking myself for not turning to one of the regulars at Campagnola and asking where else he liked to eat, so I thought I would try the forum. Of those of you who like Campagnola, where else do you go?
