the third item

Hey first post here but I just wanted to see what you guys thought about my dressing mentality.
Frankly, I would say that I am a pretty boring dresser. Most days, I usually wear khakis or jeans (khaki shorts in the warmer months) and an oxford cloth buttondown (OCBD) shirt. I have OCBDs in several different colors, and also have sport shirts in madras for the warmer months and some shirts different checks and plaids for the cooler months. However, the general equation is usually just pants+shirt=dressed.

Once the weather cools down, though, I am able to bring some more variety to my daily dress by incorporating, what I refer to as, the "third item." This is usually a sweater, a sport coat, a jacket (like a Barbour), or even a tie, but I feel like it is the essential item to completing an outfit (I do hesitate to use the word "outfit" since that is usually a word that women use, though I feel like I am using it in a slightly different context). This "third item" can completely change the outfit by becoming the focal point, making the pants and shirts to perform their roles as supporting players. When I am able to wear this third item, that is when I really feel like I am "dressed."

The fact is, though, that it is simply too hot to incorporate this "third item" pretty much from June through most of September. Of course one can wear a tie or blazer during these warmer months, but for the most part, it is simply not the preferable choice. Now that the temperatures are dropping, I am looking forward to making the most of my wardrobe. What do you guys think?

My third item is my dick tattoo. Appropriate year round!

hey third, in all seriousness your 3rd item should be a really good pair of shoes. like spend no less then $400. a good pair of shoes is fucking essential. and thats that. im glad you just graduated college and feel as if you need to write a paragraph on how you feel, but it shows man. this is the net so keep it short and simple! so go out and buy yourself a nice pair of shoes and you can tell us all about it in your second post

Be careful, soon you'll need a fourth or even FIFTH item in your outfit!

Sorry? TKJTG, it does seem like you have a similar aesthetic like me. I usually wear something similar to what you're wearing in this pic; however, I have felt like I can definitely spruce my outfits up by adding a 'third item.' Like if you added a tie or maybe a shawl-collar cardigan it would definitely make your fit stand out more. This is something I continually struggle with, too.

Wouldn't it make more sense if the "third item" referred to an auxiliary piece that didn't define your overall look but rather added a dash of intrigue to your look (e.g., watch strap, socks, pocket square). I mean, if it's your sweater, it's not really a "third item" - it's your "primary item". "Third" generally suggests a certain triviality - i.e., a merely supporting component to your look. IMO this is an incredibly stifled approach to style and I imagine it comes across very poorly. OP, please post a fit-pic to confirm

I'm not sure this is quite the conversation starter you imagined. Most guys I know who think this way tend to own a crapload of cargo pants, tees, and one pair of shoes. They think when they wear an out of the ordinary belt it's quite daring.

Just dont ever be afraid to look different from the crowds because, otherwise it doesnt really matter what you're wearing since you just look like everybody else on the street/school/office/etc.

You may be shocked to learn that there are at least five items in this picture.
