I met a fellow the other night who declared Tartine the greatest bakery in the world. He didn't say, "good bakery," he said, "I declare it the greatest bakery in the world." Fortunately, my wife had put my axes away.

I think Slanted door is an enjoyable SF experience. It has a beautiful view, very nice and helpful servers and tasty Vietnamese food. I suggest a late lunch or get there when they open for dinner. It is fun to watch the ferry commute and to take in the bay view while it is day light.

I think SF has excellent Vietnamese food. I don't mind the hole in the wall restaurants but YMMV. I used to go to PPQ in the sunset for Pho, 5 spiced chicken and curry chicken noodles. I don't remember where I used to get banh mi, but you should try it if you haven't had it before. Also, Shalimar in the Tenderloin (not the best neighborhood) for Indian food.

Slanted Door is more Asian fusion and more up scale but still quite good.

For more continental cuisine, the chicken bread salad at Zuni is quite good.

thanks, the 3000 miles of ocean is the least of my problem.. finding stuff to do around the bay area for a couple of weeks is.

Yep. I've finally been here long enough that yesterday's shakers didn't raise my heart rate. Weird thing was that I heard the first one a second before I felt it - probably the sound of the house next door bouncing on its foundation.

I would recommend La Ciccia, but I like being able to walk in and get a table, so stay the hell away, the food is terrible and the chef has a virulent, highly contagious form of leprosy.

My favorite mexican places are La Corneta (the Mission St. location) for tacos and burritos, and El Delfin for everything else.

Slanted Door is a classic SF experience, but food quality seems to cycle up and down. Tasty cocktails and a great view, though. We go to the Out The Door in the Westfield Center more often, there are always seats and the kitchen gets food out more quickly. Another Ferry Building favorite is Ferry Plaza Seafood - I think it beats the pants off of Hog Island Oyster Co (I mean, an oyster is an oyster, amiright?). Or, another great seafood joint is Anchor Bar on Castro near 19th. I love their fresh crabmeat "burger".

I didn't realize there were liquifaction probability maps. Some neighborhoods susceptible to liquifaction are ones I wouldn't have expected. http://quake.abag.ca.gov/liquefaction/maps/ P.S. you missed the earthquake AND hurricane in NYC these past couple month. Lucky eh?
