Watch this space...

Richard James Savile Row sterling silver and handblown glass cube and sphere cufflinks. I’ve been culling through my cufflinks as I’ve realized what I do and don’t wear regularly. These are fantastic, eyecatching, elegant and just don’t quite fit with my work and life style nowadays. RJ first introduced his line of cufflinks in 1999 or 2000, moving from blown glass spheres in contrasting colors that recalled marbles to cubes and later on studded “Sputnik” variants. The quality was excellent and the styling distinctive – very original and yet at some level atavistic. These are fitting examples: red glass cubes on one end of a sterling silver stem, orange spheres on the other. The glass is translucent allowing for a wonderful play of light. I’ve tried to capture that in my photos. Yes, they are sold with the box; I’ve worn them a few times but they’ve seen very little use and are in excellent condition.

Hallmarked and marked “RJ” as well on the stems; made in England.

$110 shipped in US, $120 shipped internationally.

Be the envy of your e-friends with this gorgeous Petronius tie. The new darling of the Internet cognoscenti, who prefer this Milanese tiemaker over Marinella and as a RTW alternative to the blandishments of Cappelli – be like Manton and fourinhand for a fraction of retail with this handmade woven silk necktie in repeating square patterns of green and a variety of shades of blue – skinny enough to have been worn by Miles himself. The pattern details are exquisite, see pics below. 3” wide by 56” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

Heavy woven Italian silk Alan Flusser tie. Handmade in USA. The feel of this tie immediately confirms the quality – this is no diffusion line stuff, but is from his Bergdorf/Saks period. Elegant corded pattern with repeating blue diamond motif. Strikingly individual but subtle. Self keeper. 3 7/8” wide by 55” long. $26 shipped in US, $32 shipped internationally.

Hand made Italian heavy silk tie. Small repeating gold and white double diamond motif on burgundy weave. . Self keeper tacked on sides and tucked into center seam. Self tipped. 3 5/8” wide by 55” long. $23 $15 shipped in US, $29 $21 shipped internationally.

Tie by Caleffi, one of the best shirtmakers in Rome. Fall colors paisley and leaf woodcut-style print. Hand made in Italy. 3 7/8” wide by 59” long. $23 $15 shipped in US, $29 $21 shipped internationally.

Another Caleffi tie, this one deep forest green in a diagonal weave. 4.25” wide by 56” long. $20 $15 shipped in US, $26 $21 shipped internationally.

I guess we all go through a splashy tie phase… Here are some from my Krawattenausbildung (no Hans or Fritz).

Stephen Walters & Sons English-woven navy silk tie with 1920s-1930s race cars woven pattern. This appears to be designed to show how skillful the mill could be – the images are pop, but they are also set on a tone-on-tone twill repeating square motif . Walters is one of the last of the British silk weavers; Vanners and Adamley’s are the others I am familiar with that are still around; the fabled David Evans is out of business. Made in UK. Width 3.75”, length 58”. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

iGent-eriffic umbrella pattern tie. Colorful umbrellas with variegated canopies on red silk twill groun . Self keeper tacked on the sides and tucked into the center seam. . Hand made in Italy for the Roman shop Seven Hills. Width 3.75”, length 56”. $23 $15 shipped in US, $29 $21 shipped internationally.

Gorgeous intricate foliage print by Angelo Litrico, another storied Flusser favorite. The fern fronds, fuchsia blooms and flowers resemble from a distance the paisley patterns of more CBD ties. Palette of greens, muted fuchsia, blue and yellow. Made in Italy. 3.5” wide by 58”. $24 $15 shipped in US, $30 $21 shipped internationally.

Litrico gold, peach and burgundy paisleys. Wonderfully soft. . Made in Italy. 3.75” wide by 53”. $24 $15 shipped in US, $30 $21 shipped internationally.

I suppose a subset of splashy ties are woven figure ties. Some follow:

Daks turquoise woven silk faille with white triple beaded stripe and fleur-de-lys coat of arms. Intricate pattern. Made in France. Good to wear with some Arnys for that noblesse déchue look gdl hates so much. A nice memo of the defunct retailer which gave us the “Daks tops” we love on suit pants. 3 7/8” wide by 57”. $24 shipped in US, $30 shipped internationally.

Heraldic print Santandrea (Saintandrews) silk tie. Shields and blazons with lions rampant, castles, fleurs-de-lys and quarterings. Burgundy silk twill ground. Self keeper tacked at the sides. Formerly known as Saintandrews, Santandrea is the maker of the RLPL Italian-made clothing. 4” wide by 58”. $24 shipped in US, $30 shipped internationally.

Mariano Rubinacci London House 100% silk tie handmade in Italy. The choice of legitimate bigtimers (, whnay.), poets (lasbar) and now… you. This is the real deal, not the licensed stuff sold to vox at Louis Boston or Barneys, or the new Harrods RTW tat. Showing up wearing one of these guarantees you qualification to the Esquire BDSM Top 10 (not a guarantee) and allows you to cut the line at Katz’s and Café Lalo (if paired with Rubi deerstalker, sold separately/batteries not included). Wear it to the Carlyle for a room upgrade (cite reservation code TEP69). Elegant soft colors of golds and greens make this stylized flower print on a burgundy ground sober enough to wear with a suit but secretly flashy enough for downtown hotties… or put another way, Mariano in the boardroom, Luca in the bedroom. 4” wide, 56” long. $40 shipped in US, $45 shipped internationally.

In time for fall, a daft Kilgour, French & Stanbury silk tie with oversized printed pheasant motif. Pheasants in green and dark red on navy ground. Only mad dogs, Englishmen, and discerning SFers would wear this. So British Alan Flusser and FNB must have procreated to generate it. Made in England. This tie appears to have been narrowed at some point in its life, but this is not apparent from the front of the tie or when worn. 3.25” wide by 58.5”. $24 $19 $15 shipped in US, $30 $25 $21 shipped internationally.

Some beautiful brocaded ties from the Italian tiemaker Calabrese – start a new SF trend...

Blue-green Calabrese tie in patterned weave. 3” by 58” $20 $15 shipped in US, $26 $21 shipped internationally.

Red and blue woven pattern Calabrese tie. 3” by 59” $20 $15 shipped in US, $26 $21 shipped internationally.

Red, grey and green woven motif Calabrese tie. 3.75” by 60”. $20 $15 shipped in US, $26 $21 shipped internationally.

Calabrese iridescent woven foliage tie with gold stripe. Tones change depending on light and angle. Very cool – leaves are in shades of green and blue-green, ground is steel grey going to steel blue. 3” by 56”.

Papis Como silk tie: olive ground with mauve and dark red repeating diamond pattern. Discreet but elegant. 3.25” by 50.5”. $20 shipped in US, $26 shipped internationally.

Best of British tiemakers… Holliday & Brown, Drakes and Charles Hill:
I’m culling out a number of my ties, some too CBD, others not CBD enough, many private label, from my favorite British makers… their clients were fickle and switched around (it’s astonishing how many people H&B made for at some point, rather like EG with private label shoes) until most raced to the bottom and hung them out to dry, with the result that Charles Hill and Holliday & Brown are now either dormant or defunct (H&B’s web address now just forward to the site of their owner, Italian silk weaver Mantero; Charles Hill left survivors at Seaman & Spearm and T&A but as a company it seems gone, gone, gone…).

Refreshingly CBD tie by Drake’s. Red and tan paisley with white blossom print on navy silk twill ground. Hand made in England for Carroll & Co. of Beverly Hills. Self keeper tacked at sides. 3 5/8” wide by 58” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

Drake’s paisley/divan design in dark green, navy and burgundy with cream. Thick silk twill and a pattern with more depth and detail every time I look at it. Self keeper. Subtle, certain to grow on you. Something to ponder like a Zen koan: this Drake’s tie has tags for both Drake’s and Charles Hill, which is a two-headed chicken like aberration. AlanC and I did once discover that the two companies were once affiliated, but I’ve never seen a tie with both a Drake’s makers tag and a Charles Hill “Handmade in England” label (with the little “CH”). Twice the goodness in one tie? 3.5” by 57”. $28 shipped in US, $34 shipped internationally.

Charles Hill woven tie with pattern of navy paisleys on ribbed forest green ground. Sober colors combine to make a standout and luminous visual effect. Hand made in England for Bardelli, the best classic men’s clothing shop in Milan. Charles Hill was once affiliated with Turnbull & Asser and the ties are made to about the same standard, often with the same esthetic. 3 1/8” by 58”. $28 shipped in US, $34 shipped internationally.

Charles Hill printed silk twill tie. Green ground with red and blue ovals and tiny paisley paramecia. The silk has a wonderfully soft, powdery feel although I can’t commit to saying it’s madder. The heathery mix of colors is similar to such prints, though. Self keeper. Hand made in England for the French cashmere shop Hobbs. 3.25” by 57”. $28 shipped in US, $34 shipped internationally.

Deep lake blue heavy silk twill Holliday & Brown tie with amazingly sharp eight-petaled yellow and white flower print. Unusual in the depth of color, somewhere between aqua and royal blue, and in the sparseness of the printed motif. A tie whose restrained palette belies the decadent luxuriance of the silk rib and the wonderful colors. Hand made in England. Silk tipped, self keeper. 3.75” wide by 59” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

Very unusual Holliday & Brown striped shantung silk tie in a diagonal herringbone weave. Ice blue, sandy tan and light coral pink combine with the slubby texture for a summery effect, which the herringbone weave amplifies to a shimmer. Beats the damp outside right now. Very cool. Self keeper. Hand made in England for the old Burberry’s, just like the Drake’s above. 3 1/8” wide by 56.5”. $27 shipped in US, $33 shipped internationally.

Parting with a favorite: awesome Holliday & Brown woven silk tie with abstract repeating motif outlined in gold (with red core) on a thick navy diagonal twill ground. Hand made in England private label for a long-gone merchant. Luxuriant. Self tipped. Self keeper tacked at sides. 4” wide by 60” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

Holliday & Brown paisleys (green, light blue, red and yellow) on blue ground tie. Slim. Made for a men’s shop in Vienna. 3.25” x 56”. $22 $15 shipped in US, $28 $21 shipped internationally.

Classic English woven pattern silk tie hand made in England by Holliday & Brown for the lamented Lord’s of the Burlington Arcade. Concentric squares of navy and silver with small red diamonds on a navy ground. Self keeper. 3 3/8” by 58.5”. $28 shipped in US, $34 shipped internationally.

Olive silk twill print Holliday & Brown tie with abstract motifs in brick red and light tan. Looks like something that could have inspired “Special re-editions” like the one below. From the label I’m guessing it comes from the 1960s-1970s period that some of the re-editions sampled. Hand made in England, and to those who are blind partisans of handwork I point out that I just noticed that the hand slip stitch was starting to open up on the back end of the tie (see picture). It’s easy enough to repair and will not show when worn, but I thus offer this for a discount. 4 1/8” wide by 53” long. $15 shipped in US, $22 shipped internationally.

Sometimes daring experiments don’t pay off: Holliday & Brown special re-edition silk print tie featuring a reissued pattern from their copious archives. Hand made in Italy, violent tropical greens and magentas. Self-tipped and self keeper. Definitely a tie that draws attention. Fell out of rotation pretty quick, but maybe it’s your bag. 3 3/8” by 58”. $18 shipped in US, $24 shipped internationally.

New with tag Holliday & Brown heavy woven silk tie made for Hilditch & Key of Jermyn Street. H&B used to make all the ties for H&K; at some point they moved to making only those in the “Hand Made Fine Silk Collection.” This is one of the last, a wonderfully soft silk weave of light blue and navy blue ovals on a silver-white ribbed silk ground. Self keeper tacked on the sides and folded and stitched into the seam. Extremely well made, extremely sober, perfect wintry colors for the weather ahead, stuffs a stocking well… 3.5” wide by 58”. $40 shipped in US, $46 shipped internationally.

NEW Hilditch & Key Sea Island cotton socks made in England by Pantherella. Butter yellow. Ribbed mid-calf height. Hand linked toe. 80% Sea Island cotton, 20% nylon. Medium size. $25 shipped in US, $31 shipped internationally.

$250 Hilditch & Key Jermyn St French-cuff white and blue stripe shirt. Classic spread collar and all the features that make H&K the Platonic ideal of a Jermyn St shirt (RTW, anyway): moderate spread, EXCELLENT cotton with a great hand and durability, classic pattern, pattern matching at all possible joins, mother of pearl buttons, reinforced pentagonal gusset, single needle stitching, rounded corner double cuffs so as not to catch on your jacket sleeve, moderate allowances of cloth inside the cuff and the shoulder to allow for lengthening of the sleeve, and the Jermyn St RTW fit, which is to say roomy (but not like BB). 15.5” neck, 32.5” sleeves. Used gently, well cared for… the great thing about a good shirt is that it gets better with age and wear until even in decrepitude it is revered… like a former president. This shirt is in great shape; I realized I just wasn’t wearing it much because I wasn’t feeling the pattern. $35 shipped in US, $45 shipped internationally.

Harvie & Hudson Jermyn St French-cuff white with yellow and blue check shirt. Classic spread collar, square-ended double cuffs, mother of pearl buttons; made in UK for the late, great Best of British Shirts website a former forum member ran. Jermyn St RTW fit, which is to say roomy (but not like BB). 15” neck, 32.5” sleeves. Worn very few times, well cared for… the great thing about a good shirt is that it gets better with age and wear until even in decrepitude it is revered… like a former president. This shirt is in great shape; I realized I just wasn’t wearing it much because I wasn’t feeling the pattern. $35 shipped in US, $45 shipped internationally.

Harvie and Hudson enamel on base metal toggle-backed cufflinks. Beautiful shade of lilac enamel on fronts. Metal is base metal, there is something stamped on the inside but I can’t get a good look at it. Purchased from Harvie and Hudson on Jermyn Street but not worn much, so I’m selling them on. $25 shipped in US, $31 shipped internationally

Groovy grooved crystal ball cufflinks on black thread. Purchased from Barneys a long time ago, realized I never wear them. Very pretty, will get comments. $25 shipped in US, $31 shipped internationally

Cartier 18K gold Trinity wraparound or "stirrup" cufflinks in rose, white and yellow gold. Absolutely stunning. Hallmarked and signed. According to antique sellers online selling the same model, these are a rare design that hasn't been produced in decades. I don't know about that because these look basically new. I do know that these are a beautiful example of the wraparound design, which Cartier is credited with inventing, and that the Trinity motif of interlocking rings was a favorite of royal nincompoop and proto-iGent the Dook of Windsor on jewelry purchased for Wallis Simpson. These links open in the center, as shown in the pictures. They are generously sized and measure approximately one full inch across at widest point. I note that I may list these concurrently on ebay and may take them down if they do sell on that venue. I'm seeing them selling on estate jewelry sites for $3900- $4100. I'd imagine Cartier wants considerably more for them new. I'd like to sell them for $2500 firm, shipped anywhere in the world. Please note my customs/duties language at the bottom of this post if you are considering purchasing from abroad.

Hallmarks for each link: “750” inside a small polygon on each link, as pictured below:

WIDE TIE BLOWOUT PACKAGE: This is a gorgeous Sulka tie with woven rampant dragon motif in mauve on brown background with gold spot stripes. I realized I just can’t pull it off. The details are gorgeous and I’ve tried to provide them as best I can photograph, including the obligatory Sulka reinforced neck piece. Excellent condition. The weave is like that of Charvet, except even at its most daft I don’t think Charvet would have done a pattern like this. This is a wide tie: a good 4 inches at widest by 54 inches long. I am throwing in two Kilgour, French & Stanbury ties along with this purchase. They are both in wearable condition although have definitely seen some wear along the way. $40 $30shipped in US, $46$36 shipped internationally.

This handsewn Kilgour, French & Stanbury tie (included as part of the wide tie blowout package) features a midcentury deco-type print on a buttercream background. It is also boldly wide… 4.75” by 58”. I will hazard a suggestion that skinny ties and lapels have become so mainstream as to be on the way out… they were daring and new in 2001, filtered out from Hedi Slimane to other designers by 2005, and are now all over from Mad Men to Brooks Brothers to the local mall… which all in all is not a long trip, but certainly a ubiquitous one… Like it or not, wide lapels and wide ties will likely be part of the Thermidorean reaction to this austerity, as seen by Tom Ford, whose clothes’ stylized boldness suggest a masculinity so overdone as to be camp… Wear these ironically or not… with swagger. FREE with Sulka tie above…

This second Kilgour, French & Stanbury tie (included as part of the wide tie blowout package) features a heavy silk weave with a red woven rib stripe on a navy ground. 4 3/8” by 57”. FREE with Sulka tie above…

Robert Talbott "Chelsea" pocket square in thick violet silk twill and lion rampant design. Machined edges. Unfortunately the idiotic Century 21 label on the reverse left an adhesive mark, but it is not visible from the front and does not affect wear. I don't think I ever wore this and I bought it new. $20 $17 shipped in US, $25 $23 shipped internationally. 11.5" on a side.

Church’s cedar sprung shoetrees. Sold at the Church’s San Francisco shop back when they had one, I believe these are rebranded Rochester. They are heavily sprung and should fit up to a US 8 although they may stretch shoes as well. Note gouges at the top from trying to disengage the damn things. Was going to donate them to Goodwill and then thought they’d just throw them away. Selling here for barely more than it would cost me to ship. $15 shipped in US, no international shipping.

Great Benson & Clegg of the Piccadilly Arcade tie in soft silk. Made in England. Benson & Clegg were one of the first so-called “Companions of Savile Row”, which I believe was one of the ancestor organizations for the Savile Row Bespoke triad – they were Savile Row tailors located off the Row, in fact just off Jermyn Street in the Piccadilly Arcade near Budd. I believe they are also the successor to Ian Fleming’s tailors Benson, Perry & Whitley, although I welcome any corrections from someone who knows better. At any rate, this tie itself is pretty nifty – abstract oblong print in colors that resemble stained glass or Bisazza mosaics – turquoises and corals. 3 5/8” wide by 57” long.
$20 $18 shipped in US, $26 $24 shipped internationally.

SOLD ITEMS:

SOLD Navy and green paisley tie by Principe of Florence: see Trad from another angle with this tie from the shop Flusser described as the Brooks Brothers of Italy. 3.75” by 58”. $23 $15 shipped in US, $29 $21 shipped internationally.

SOLD Unlined woven silk tie by the old Beale & Inman. I’ve amassed a few of these ties that are supposed to have been made in the old time-honored way and the result is… different. The emphasis is not on the folding arms race the way it is with modern five-, seven- and more-fold ties. Rather, it seems to be just on having a tie made in a particular silk by one’s shirtmaker and not having to think about it again. Here, the effect is rather splendid. Deep red and blue woven silk, diagonal stripes. No tipping, so there is neat stitching at the hems of the tie. Because the tie is unlined, the camera exaggerates the impression of the folds in a way that is not apparent IRL. 3.25” wide, 56” long. $28 24 $21shipped in US, $34 30 $27shipped internationally.

SOLD New hand-rolled printed silk Holland & Holland pocket square. Shells and bullets on a burgundy ground. Hand made in England, although it doesn’t seem to indicate who by – other H&H squares were usually Drake’s. Part of a set that I bought for the other square, so am selling on. 16” on a side. $20 shipped in US, $26 shipped internationally.

SOLD Beale & Inman skinny navy wool tie with square end. One side has a woven pattern of small sky-blue fleurs-de-lys, very cool. Made by the great shirtmakers and haberdashers prior to being taken over and made into an expensive Italian RTW shop. Charles Dickens and Jiddu Krishnamurti (the best-dressed mystic in history) shopped there, and celebrate your own 18 Brumaire wearing a tie from the same shop patronized by Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte!!!! (Although, come to think of it, he probably wouldn’t have worn those Bourbon fleurs-de-lys.) The other side of the tie has sky chevrons, I’m not sure if the tie is reversible but I don’t see why not. Add vintage charm to your wardrobe. 2 inches wide by 52.5”. Remember that due to the thickness of wool ties, you don’t need a lot of length to tie a thick knot. $22 shipped in US, $28 shipped internationally.

SOLD Gorgeous heavy silk repp twill tie by Petronius of Milan. Thin black and white stripes on deep red ground. Self keeper. Get this awesome piece for a small fraction of retail now that it’s become the groupthink It Tie and a favorite of the late Manton. 3.75” by 57.5”. $40 shipped in US, $46 shipped internationally.

SOLD This Petronius tie puts the G in CBD: navy blue ground with small woven flowers. Sold under their family name, Wollisch – see the recent interview with Gigliola Wollisch of Petronius in Monocle, beloved by , the magazine for people who think they are more intelligent than they really are. A subtle small diagonal herringbone weave provides visual interest to the ground while the woven ice blue flowers with pale gold centers add to the richness of detail. Self keeper. Luxuriate in CBD with Italian flair. 3.5” by 55”. $40 shipped in US, $46 shipped internationally.

SOLD Rare Ballantyne Scottish-made hand intarsia piece from their innovative fashion collections a few years back. I can’t pull this off. Worn once or twice, carefully hand washed and in perfect shape. Medium size (for sizes 39-41). V neck with the signature Ballantyne argyles hand laid on their frame knitting machines in mauve and beige, with also the intarsia “Royal” in purple. Cream body. Fully fashioned collar, cuffs you fold back over themselves for tightness, etc. Gorgeous quality that we won’t see again: after its spinoff from the struggling Dawson Cashmere about ten years ago to Luca di Montezemolo’s Charme investment group, it underwent reorganizations and shrinkages, including a severing of its manufacturing arm (under the name HJ and JB Cashmere Mills) from the brand as part of a joint venture with Zegna Baruffa and Brooks Brothers. When a large order fell through earlier this year, the manufacturing arm went into liquidation. A small fraction of the staff have been retained as part of a new company called Caerlee Mills, but most of what is now being sold as Ballantyne is made in Italy. Moral: get what is left while you can. This would retail for over $1000 new because of the intarsia work. I got it as a sample, and will pass it on for $100 shipped in US, $110 internationally. Free to A Suitable Will if he posts a pic of him wearing it on his blog.

SOLD Gloriously CBD Holliday & Brown sky blue printed heavy silk twill tie hand made in England for Barney’s. So careful you can feel your own sphincter constricting. Repeating tiny flower print of navy and white alternating with white and red. Buy and wear for Manton (he will be missed). Easily competes with Marinella and Drake’s for conservatism, hell, could compete with Podhoretz… Selling not for political reasons but because it is too conservative for my taste. Self-tipped and self keeper. 3.5” wide by 58.5”. . $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD Striking sky blue woven silk Holliday & Brown tie with triple repeating flower pattern. The sky blue ground is woven into a sort of repeating honeycombed dot pattern which makes it catch the light. The triple flowers are white, pink and white again and alternately slant sideways and vertically. Self keeper. Silk tipped. Hand made, but doesn’t say where – I’m guessing this was made while they were transferring production between England and Italy. 3 5/8” wide by 60”. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD Drake’s tiny puppytooth weave tie. Dark green and silver-white pattern in heavy woven silk. Tipped in blue silk twill. Self keeper. Hand made in England for the old Burberry’s. Gorgeous and classic, ended up being too classic for me. 3 5/8” wide by 57.5” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD The first time I saw this Mariano Rubinacci London House woven latticework silk tie, I thought it was a print, the pattern and colors were so sharp. Intricate frame pattern in dark Green around green and burgundy windowpanes. Handmade in Italy. Self keeper, of course. The choice of legitimate bigtimers (, whnay.), poets (lasbar) and now… you. This is the real deal, not the licensed stuff sold to vox at Louis Boston or Barneys, or the new Harrods RTW tat. Note the tone-on-tone embroidered “LH” on the label – I’ve never seen it before. 4” wide, 59” long. $40 shipped in US, $45 shipped internationally.

SOLD Classic, elegant and understated Kilgour, French & Stanbury silk tie. Handmade in England. Self keeper. Paisleys framed in red and green latticework design on dark ground. A sober and serious tie with intricate detail when you stop to look at it – like the wearer? Excellent condition. 3.25” wide by 54”. $29 $21 $15 shipped in US, $35$26 $21 shipped internationally.

SOLD New, never worn Holliday & Brown green silk twill tie with lighter green print and coral accents. This is from their last hurrah making ties in England and bears the tags to that effect. Self keeper and silk tipped. Hand made in England; the silk has a wonderful dry hand. It’s beautiful, but I finally realized that I just am never going to wear it. 3 7/8” by 57”. $45 shipped in US, $51 shipped internationally.

SOLD Harvie and Hudson large houndstooth woven silk tie. Dark blue and silvery white houndstooth pattern. I got this because it reminded me of the old RJ tie patterns (he had some houndsteeth that were wider than the ties themselves) but realized I’m not going to wear it. It’s gotten worn at one edge (see detail pic) and between that and other aspects of normal wear I’m throwing it up here for cheap in case anyone wants it as an “old but good” tie. 3 7/8” wide by 56” long.

SOLD Douglas Hayward of Mount Street burgundy and cream harlequin print tie. Handsome silk twill, self keeper and silk tipped. A deceptively simply design. The tailor to much of the Swinging Sixties London set – Michael Caine first and foremost, along with Terry Stamp, but also Roger Moore (in – gulp – A View to a Kill) and John Le Carré, who allegedly based Harry Pendel in The Tailor of Panama on Hayward. Hand made in England by Drake’s. Make it yours before we have to give up the Canal again. 3 5/8” wide by 56.5” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD Luscious new with tags cashmere sweater made in England for Saks Fifth Avenue. Mid blue heather. Lusciously soft, tight weave. The only recent cashmere maker in England of which I’m aware was Alan Paine, and now that’s just become another label. The rest of the British makers were in Scotland except for Corgi in Wales, which uses the “Made in Great Britain” label. Get a piece of the good stuff at a great price for this winter. Saks hang tag still attached. Large. b]$100 shipped in US, $110 shipped internationally.

SOLD Classic paisley tie made in Italy for the men’s shop Bardelli – in true Italian conservative dressing style (as opposed to the Luca/Lapo-style whatnot) muted colors of cornflower blue, tan, burgundy and olive green. Love this shop. 3.25” wide by 59”. $24 shipped in US, $30 shipped internationally.

SOLD Arnys handmade printed silk tie. Fall colors: Repeating pattern of blue and green maple pods on burgundy/brown ground, with discreet “A” insignia at bottom. 3.5” wide by 58” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD Sambrook Witting madder tie – nothing else could have that powdery feel to it or those glowing yet restrained colors. Silk twill, conservative paisleys. A tour de force by one of the companies formerly supplying Marinella with silks; the maker Vivax supplied cashmere and silk scarves to Lords, among others… 3.5” wide by 55” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD EG Cappelli Napoli tie. Be like your favorite SF bigtimers at a fraction of the price and without having to fly to Naples to kneecap Ambrosi. When you buy a SF bigtimer-endorsed tie brand, you aren’t just buying a tie, you’re buying an experience, a rite of passage as important as one’s first self shot in the office restroom to post a picture with urinals in the background for strange men to comment on on the Internet…. But I digress. Find out why the SF Smart Set coos over the CBD flower print. Handle the heavy silk twill, wonder at its sensuous weight. Knot it around your neck and feel a sensuous, transgressive frisson that will make you feel like you’ve died and gone to Will’s blog. Dark blue, print of yellow and blue flowers, refreshingly artisanal little rectangular label, self-tipped, self keeper with ends tacked at the sides and stitched into the center seam. Hand made in Italy. 3 7/8” by 59”. $40 shipped in US, $46 shipped internationally.

SOLD Hunt & Winterbotham oatmeal heather tweed tie. Made in Scotland for this iconic cloth mill. 3 1/8” by 56”. $22 shipped in US, $28 shipped internationally.

SOLD Arnys completely handmade and hand-rolled unlined seven-fold “Cravate d’atelier” tie in heavy silk organza in a burgundy and gold check. These are unlike any other tie I’m familiar with – Arnys’ interpretation of what ties must have been like close to their inception, when a necktie was simply one way of folding and tying a scarf. As such, the edges of the blades are hand rolled; the interior is completely unlined and the tie itself is in thick, heavy silk which helps give it its body. Decadent and makes for a bit different experience in knotting from the everyday. Self keeper, of course, folded in and tacked at the edges and into the center seam. 3 7/8” by 58”.

$50 shipped in the US, $55 shipped internationally.

SOLD Arnys tweed sportcoat. Made in Italy in a very heavy, thick heathered wool tweed, mainly green but with flecks of blue. Single-breasted, double vents, three buttons. Flap pockets. The lapel notch is normal and not the showy cran Necker. Size is given as “52” on one tag and “40” on another – I think this is somewhere between a 42 S and a 40 R, please see the measurements.

Armpit to armpit measurement: 21”

Shoulder to shoulder: 19.5”-20”

Sleeve, from shoulder: 25 3/8”

Length (from bottom of collar): 30.5”

$120 shipped in US, $135 shipped internationally.

SOLD A Drake’s tie unlike any I’ve seen before: a goldenrod silk weave with an irregular, almost rustic pattern reminiscent of silk tussah. Blue woven flowers with green centers. Self keeper tacked at sides. Hand made in England for one of the many incarnations of SF shop Bullock & Jones, which began as a tailor (see Lucius Beebe’s The Big Spenders and now is in some sort of limbo as an appendage to the SF Saks. Wear it and think of sunnier times and climes. 3.75” wide by 58” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD Smooth silk Turnbull & Asser handmade in England tie. Self keeper stitched into the center seam, the best way. Silvery silk twill with small light blue polka dots. Dashing for a wintry evening or a snowy morning. 3 3/8” by 57”. $25 shipped in US, $31 shipped internationally.

SOLD Turquoise cufflinks with silvertone toggle backs. I believe the stones are real turquoise; the mountings and backs are base metal. Nifty and reasonable for that luxe rockabilly look. Stones are ½” in diameter. $20 shipped in US, $25 shipped internationally.

SOLD Tincati heavy woven silk tie. One of the storied Milan emporia beloved of Alan Flusser, this shop, which formerly brought together the best makers of England and Europe under its house label, is now trying to relaunch as a designer. Ties like these are wearable memories of a more dignified, quality-minded epoch in this house’s history. Light gold with repeating blue woven flower and gold square pattern. Self keeper tacked on sides and in center seam. Self tipped, as well. 3.75” wide by 59” long. $24 shipped in US, $30 shipped internationally.

SOLD English-made Ralph Lauren Purple Label tie. Turquoise ground with small coral woven dots. Beautiful. The turquoise silk is iridescent and makes me think of some of the Sam Hober Thai silks. Self keeper tacked on sides. Tipped in purple silk twill, of course. Hand made in England, back when Ralph not only aped the look but used the makers. Width 3.75”, length 58”. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD Another English-made Ralph Lauren Purple Label tie. Heavy woven silk in deep purple with silver and blue accents – repeating squares pattern. Self keeper tacked on sides. Tipped in purple silk twill, of course. Hand made in England. Width 3.5”, length 58”. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD Perfectly simple Holliday & Brown woven silk tie hand made in England for Paul Stuart. Woven squares in navy, brown and tan. The squares are not so large as to be loud nor so small as to be uptight and well… square. Self keeper tacked at sides. 3.5” wide by 58” long. $24 shipped in US, $30 shipped internationally.

SOLD Another Tincati heavy woven silk tie, this one in solid navy with repeating rectangle design. Wonderful body, and because of the discreet color and pattern, goes with almost anything – a shade more elegant than a grenadine. Self keeper tacked on sides and in center seam. 3 7/8” wide by 59” long. $24 shipped in US, $30 shipped internationally.

SOLD Charvet wide stripe woven silk tie. At first glance another red and blue tie, at closer look an intricate and iridescent pattern gives texture and that Charvet jewel-like sheen. Hand made in France. 3 5/8” wide by 55” long. $30 shipped in US, $36 shipped internationally.

SOLD Beautifully made heavy silk tie by Andrea Conte of Naples. Discreet tan rectangle with white dot pattern on black herringbone ground. Self keeper tacked on sides and tucked into center seam. Self tipped. 4” wide by 57” long. $23 shipped in US, $29 shipped internationally.

SOLD Crossed swords and anchor motif woven pattern silk tie for Carven Paris. Navy silk ground, light blue anchor and silver swords with gold handles. Perfect for September 19th or whenever the fancy strikes. Made in France. 3 15/16” wide by 55”. $24 shipped in US, $30 shipped internationally.

SOLD Mariano Rubinacci London House gorgeous mosaic-like printed 100% silk tie handmade in Italy. Superb large Romanesque or arabesque pattern in sober reds and blues that keep it from being loud. Self keeper, of course. The choice of legitimate bigtimers (, whnay.), poets (lasbar) and now… you. This is the real deal, not the licensed stuff sold to vox at Louis Boston or Barneys, or the new Harrods RTW tat. 3 7/8” wide, 55” long. $40 shipped in US, $45 shipped internationally.

SOLD Red and blue heavy silk weave Calabrese tie. The flamboyant pattern – almost himself zigzag stripes -- actually makes it look like one of the British ties. Self keeper tucked into center seam. Self tipped as well. 4” by 60”. $20 shipped in US, $26 shipped internationally.

SOLD Atkinson’s (of Atkinson’s Irish poplin, beloved of quality tiemakers and iGent tielovers worldwide) silk repp tie – nice hand, conservative stripes of navy, burgundy and olive. Good condition. Made in UK. 3.5” wide, 56” long. $20 $17[/st] $15 shipped in US, $25 $23 $21shipped internationally.

SOLD A rarity – Bellmanshuset 19th-century decorative design print based on the handpainted designs of the Swedish design house. This reminded me of the Jacquard designs from A l’escalier d’argent, the little shop now a favorite of… RSS… Like this tie, those ties are based on authentic patterns from antique prints and weavings. In keeping with its more Northern heritage, this features a more restrained, almost icy, palette of tawny tan on a ground of pearlescent blue twill. Wonderfully soft hand. Self keeper tacked on the sides and into the center seam. This bears the crowned insignia of SFV (Statens Fastighetsverk), the National Property Board Sweden, which is effectively its national heritage trust. Unlike US museums, they appear actually to sell interesting quality ties as souvenirs. Made in Italy. 3 7/8” wide by 56”. $28 shipped in US, $34 shipped internationally except to Sweden, I’ll ship there for domestic price.

SOLD Mint condition Turnbull & Asser silk evening scarf, burgundy check on ivory silk with short fringe. Bought, realized I wasn’t going to wear it, decided to pass it on to those with more dashing evenings. Made in England; construction is “tubular” (no ); “Turnbull and Asser London” is printed at both ends for those who like such things. 11.5” wide by approximately 60” long including fringe, which is about 1/2” long at each end. $50 shipped in US, $55 shipped internationally.

SOLD Luciano Soprani woven foliage tie – beautiful tendrils with blooms of indigo and palest pink. Made in Italy. 3” wide by 59”. $24 shipped in US, $30 shipped internationally.

SOLD Richard James Savile Row handmade in England purple and bronze frond design tie. Woven silk, tipped like all RJ ties in mauve silk twill. Classic RJ design. 3.75” wide by 57” long. $24 shipped in US, $30 shipped internationally.

SOLD A beautiful printed silk Beale & Inman tie in just two colors, deep red twill with blue divan prints outlining red paisley designs. Lined and tipped, but with what feels like a pretty thin lining under the thick silk – the better to try out those 85 different tie knots. It’s extremely simple but interesting, as well as conservative without being fussy (or Flussy) the way that a lot of conservative ties strike me. This red is just a little bit lighter and less orangey than the tie immediately above. The slip-stitch loop appears to be displayed outside the tie for some reason.
3 1/8” wide, 58” long. $25 21 shipped in US, $31 27 shipped internationally.

SOLD Blue printed silk twill Beale & Inman tie. Yellow or cream paisleys inside coral on a blue ground. Like its mate above, lined but not obnoxiously so.
3” wide, 56” long. $25 21 shipped in US, $31 27 shipped internationally.

SOLD The Memoirs of Alexis, Baron de Rede. Privately published after his death and edited by Hugo Vickers, who also worked on a biography of iGent antihero the Dook of Windsor. Sumptuously illustrated and photographed, this volume chronicles the ascent of Rede from Le Rosey-educated ephebe to orphaned kept man to patron of the arts and president of the Rolling Stones’ management company. Along the way, he describes his dealings with demigods of mid-century dandyism, including Lucius Beebe, Arturo Lopez and Carlos de Beistegui and his love for the bespoke shoes of Anthony Cleverley (mind you, this is not a book about Cleverley). So iconic was Rede a customer of Anthony Cleverley that the bespoke shoemakers GJ Cleverley, named for Anthony’s uncle, have introduced a new line of Anthony Cleverley shoes inspired by Rede’s shoes and feature several of Rede’s orders in their bespoke catalog – as they do on Centipede’s website. However, Rede was perhaps most famous for his painstaking restoration of the 18th-century Hotel Lambert, now a historical landmark, where he spent most of his life, and this book does that labor of love ample justice. Witness a swirl of parties and masked balls, a gasp of gilded ghey gossip, and marvel at the reflections of a man without, it seems, a great deal of introspection, but a great deal of intelligence, charm, taste and luck. These are, I believe, out of print. Copies now sell for up to a thousand dollars – or more. I have an extra copy which is new and has never been unwrapped from its shop. These photos are from my personal copy. I will sell this for $500 firm anywhere in the world.
