Given there is zero luck involved in chess and there's a whole mess of very smart people playing, it can deliver massive blows to egos the likes of which few other competitions can. There's a larger history of mental illness associated with competitive chess than any other competition man has devised.
How many grand masters have freaked out over the years? I'm sure Bobby Fisher got invited to a few parties back in the day, but now he's busy talking to himself and getting put on no-fly lists.
