Hawaii hotels

Want to spend some time in Hawaii.

What are some of the best options? Price not too much of a concern. Probably still stay on big island though.

Thanks

I'm going to the Big Island in a few weeks, so I would know better then, but I know the Four Seasons is supposed to be great, the Mauna Kea always is (awesome beach) and so is the Mauna Lani. I don't know smaller ones other than Kona Village, but you really want to be at a nice resort, since everything else is wasteland.

It's been 5 yrs but I stayed at a couple of smaller B&B type places on the Big Island and it was great. Big resorts are fine for Maui, Kauai... but the Big Island is less about beaches and more for exploring imo.

I bumping this threak to see what you guys have as suggestions for the Big Island. I'm looking at the Fairmont Orchid, but would love any type of input.

Thanks, guys.

So, if your expectations are low, I know a great place. "Expectations low" means nothing like the class or resorts where you ride a train to the lobby before swimming with the dolphins in the hotel pool: instead think where do the locals stay to avoid the resorts?

The Manago Hotel in Captain Cook is fabulous: its a small place run by a local Japanese family, who seem to tend the vegetable garden out back when there is nothing to do. And the Aloha Cafe is down the road, where again if your expectations are low, is a great place for a breakfast overlooking the ocean.

I used to live on Ohau, and those kinds of small places appeal to me much more than the mega-resorts up the coast in Kona, where I've stayed for various conferences. YMMV- luxury and the Manago don't go in the same sentence, but that is its charm.

Taking the family to Oahu next month. Splitting time between Moana Surfrider & Turtle Bay. Will report back with my experience.

Stayed in a hotel in that area for about 3 weeks for work and could not wait to get into the corp apartment out of tourist central.

Have the pork chops there.

I'd still rather stay at Hualalai though.

I've never stayed at the Hualalai. In its class, it looks like a good place. I've stayed up in Waikoloa and in the southern parts of Kona proper- neither of which really seemed special to me, in the way that on Oahu both the Halekulani and the Royal Hawaiian do. When I first googled Hualalai I thought it was up in the horse country on the big island- that would be really cool.

Just to let you know if you want to see more of Hawaii, I used to live on Oahu, and if money is not too much of a problem, there are boats/ planes that go between the islands for a fairly cheap price

I am leaving for 6 nights in Kauai and 5 nights on Maui in two months. I am staying at the Kauai Beach Resort, I got a ocean view room for $125 a night. It regularly sells for $200 so I felt pretty good about that. I didn't want to spend all my money on the room and not have anything left over for food. But since I am saving so much I have plenty of money for helicopter rides, food, and fun

I've stayed at the Fairmont Orchid twice - once when it was the Ritz-Carlton, once when it was the Fairmont. Beautiful hotel - I recall the Polo Lounge being a particularly nice bar. I'd recommend it, but then again, I've not stayed anywhere else on the Big Island, so I have little basis for comparison. I would recommend grabbing dinner in Kona though - fantastic local seafood places.
