Flaking cigar wrapper

Thread Starter
Here's the issue: regardless of how well humidified the cigar is, or what type of cigar it is, it starts flaking when I cut it (and I have a great cutter). The wrapper cracks or just starts unraveling.

And if, by sheer miracle, the cut turns out clean and nice (and no tobacco crumbs get into my mouth"”another pet peeve), it's guaranteed to start flaking and becoming undone after a few minutes of handling it. It's pissing me off to the point where I'm throwing out good cigars after a few minutes because I can't deal with the problem.

HELP ME!

i've had that.
but only with dry cigars.

is the cigar spongy when you squeeze it?
does it bounce back in your fingers?

i thought my humidor was well humidified then I did the squeeze test and some of my cigars were hard as a rock.

Here are some possible problems:
  • The cigars are not humidified properly
  • You don't have a good cutter
  • You cut them too deep
  • You handle them too roughly
  • They are cheap cigars
  • All of the above or a combination of some of the above

I think it's either that your cigar is still too dry, and your cutter may be blunt

I'm guessing one of these two.

if it really pisses you off, send them to me, I will make the sacrifice and smoke them.

but I agree with the above - too dry or too dull. it could also be that they dried out and then rehumidified, that seems to take some of the elasticity from the wrapper, even if they seem to be springy.

Kind of mentioned, but make sure your not cutting below the lowest cap. Most cigars will have a double or triple cap. Just make sure you leave at least one.

If you aren't smoking exclusively torpedo-shaped cigars (the ones with the triangle head), then why don't you try using a punch cut on the round headed ones? That way you won't be cutting through the cap completely, thus removing the wrapper falling apart issue, and you won't have to worry about the tobacco in your mouth. Win-win. Plus, I've been fancying my Xikar Xi009 punch recently, and it has treated me very well. A BOTL at a herf I went to recently had a "nub" punch (promotional I'm guessing) that was enormous.
