I haven't received any response from C&J, but I do imagine EG wouldn't just make things up about this mysterious "Stern" suede oxford.

I'd still think about $260 for a C&J handgrade suede oxford though. Consider that the tan Tellmans were available on eBay for approx $160-180 plus shipping. I also saw a pair of the suede EGs in the current PL line go for a little over $300, albeit those were the ugly ones with elastics.

I guess I've already gotten $5 worth of fun out of this, so whatever happens it'll be interesting.

Quick question: mink suede means it's made from mink hides, no?

Mink refers to the color - it's still a "reverse calf" hide.

For an example of mink suede by EG, see here:

No, raccoon fur.

My money is on tan calf C&J (benchgrades). I find it more likely that the photo was an error rather than the price and color... That said, if they are handrades in dark brown suede, I would gladly buy a pair for $260 if the last fits me.

But the description on Polo.com next to the picture read:

Quote:
Corben Shoe
Price: $325.00

- Handsome and elegant oxford shoe, handmade in England.
- Soft and supple suede upper with wingtip detailing at the toe and along major seams.
- Hand-stitched leather sole with outside reinforced stacked heel.
- Three-quarter leather padded insole.
- Comes with a signature protective drawstring felt bag. Made in England.

which matched the picture (since we know that polo.com erroneously calls broguing "wingtip", just look at the Grant description...)

I'm still thinking they might be EGs, possibly in tan calf. Maybe there's something to the theory that they're closeouts as part of the shift in PL maker. (Assuming that's true.) While I'm impressed by the power of SF, it seemed like these shoes, newly listed on the Polo site, sold out awfully quickly. Perhaps the quantity was limited for a reason?

There's also the baffling question of pricing. Are any of the C&J laceups priced at $325? Wouldn't that have to be a pricing mistake too?

The greatest potentials for disappointment I see are the possibilities that they'll: 1) be made in Italy; 2) not be laceups at all.

Indeed. Then perhaps they are EG suede... I still think that's unlikely though - the answer will come soon.

12D, maybe I'm getting the velcro sandals. Or, on a more hopeful note, maybe the bubblewrap is filled with helium.
