I'm doing a redeye flight later this week and pretty much need to sleep the entire time. What do you guys do? I want to avoid having to take out a prescription.

I'm not a fan of drugs for sleeping, they might put me out but I really don't feel much better than if I didn't sleep at all. Kind of like using caffeine to stay awake, it doesn't make me feel any less tired, just jittery. Anyway, a few valerian root capsules usually seem to help. Also, I highly recommend some slipper-socks, I feel so much more relaxed with shoes off, and these help keep feet warm and keep your socks from getting all grody.

I am flying cross-country on Weds and I would like some advice too. I have never been able to sleep more than 20 minutes on a plane. Even if I close my eyes, I am in a constant half-awake state. The noise, the irregular sounds, etc really bother me. I can sleep fine even if a siren is going off as long as it's a constant pattern but once you introduce variables such as the sound of my neighbor shuffling or the dining cart hitting someone's knee or announcements, it's hard for me to sleep. I don't consider myself a picky sleeper but I have never been able to pull it off on planes. Even red-eye flights.

window seat. sunglasses. earplugs. blanket. no music, no movies, no books. Eat a big fatty dinner a few hours before so you get tired.

Its hard to do w/o ambien unless you're really tired. maybe some nyquil would help but unless you've done it before, it might not work all that well and you'll have restless sleep and going in and out.

Sorry. Impossible for me. Even on trans-atlantic flights. Even reading tax code.

I'm the opposite of Thomas. I can't help but to fall asleep. I'm usually asleep before the plane leaves the ground. Get a window seat, if at all possible, because it allows you to turn in and get a little more angle and you don't have to worry about people jostling you back and forth to go piss, or walk down the aisle, etc. I find the "white noise" from the flight to be perfect for me.

Maybe also try:
Hitting the gym or swimming a bunch of laps a few hours prior
Getting up extra early that morning

Start a neurosurgery residency. Then you'll be able to sleep anywhere.
