T-Fal "Activfry" deep fryer

Gentlemen,

Has anyone here bought one of these?

According to the product description you can make fries, etc. with only 1 tbsp of oil (which is a plus if you absolutely gotta have some fries). I've come across mixed reviews for the product itself, though.

The appeal of this product is the low oil requirement. We have a Euro brand at home which does the job, but it's a major PITA to clean.

I don't know anything about the T Fal, but if you want really great fries, just try this is easy method/recipe:

Get some Pentland Dell heritage potatoes from England, peel, cut in sticks using something like a Masamoto Honyaki knife. Fry twice in duck fat (just render some fat from a decent Muscovy duck), finish off with a little Fleur de Sel de Camarque and I like to finish mine off with some White Alba truffle shavings, but that's not that necessary. All these things should be pretty easy to find.

Sounds like these eat well. Thanks for the recipe!

i happen to have a few muscovy ducks lying around that i'm not planning on using anytime soon if anybody wants me to render them some fat.

The idea seems cool, so I looked it up a bit - the kilo of fries in one spoon of oil take 45 minutes to cook, and if you're not dropping your fries twice, they're never gonna be that great. It might be good if it were able to fry onions to onion soup brown, because I hate standing over the stove doing that, but I don't see anything else this machine can do that I can't (and faster the old fashioned way)...

This is why you're my boy! You saved me the trouble of posting my recipe.

Cool. Ever since my supply of mammoth fat was cut off (Aleksei's been having trouble with greenies up in Siberia again), cooking's been a real chore.

In case you hadn't seen it yet, David Lebovitz reviewed one in February:

He also has links to other reviews at the end of his post.

The Tefal Acti-Fry has suffered from a slew of complaints regarding design and build quality, resulting in a 300m lawsuit, and several Watchdog program features. See here http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/..._in_smoke.html Personally I wouldn't risk it until they released a revised model that fixed this issues... which they have yet to do as far as I know.
