Happy Diwali to all our Hindu members...........

AJ, I lived in Delhi for 2 years (2002-2004) and I vividly recall the sweet shops being overwhelmed during this time of year.

I personally don't east sweets, but I'm a sucker for the spicy Gujarati items made during Diwali!

I went to an indian friend's house last year for diwali. I believe they hail from southern india (vegetarians, very little dairy in the food either). At any rate, of all the sweets my favorite were these sticky spiral things (like dough that had been rolled and then coiled into a spiral, then fried and covered in some kind of syrup). The syrup had bits of cardamom in it if I recall. Any clues as to what this is called?

Delhi, Happy Diwali to you as well. Daily lunch is very much the same as you have mentioned. One subzi (cooked vegetables), one dal (somewhat like lLentil soup) , yoghurt and 2 rotis.

No problem, I will check with my courier whether they can deliver food items to the US

No idea about the south Indian you are talking about. Anyways, the pre Diwali cheer was very strong this year at least in the stock exchange with the benchmark indices at all time highs, rising 5% in the 4 days preceding Diwali and India's biggest IPO listing at 30% premium on the chhoti (small) Diwali day.

Its Holi time here, and my mother hosts a dinner for both my sisters and their in laws. Generally we get a cook from outside to come over and cook north Indian food at our place. This time, we decided to have south Indian food instead of north Indian. So we got a south indian restaurant to cater and they put up a live counter and made hot appams and dosas to order. Some pics

^^ potatoes ? :confused I think you are talking about cocktail idli, a starter in which an idli is sliced into 4 quarters and dipped into 'gunpowder' masala

oh. They look just like potatoes! That's strange; my parents are south indian but I've never seen "cocktail idlis" before. They look good. The rest of the food looks great as well. Hope you guys enjoyed it all, everything looks fantastic.
