and yeah...se needs to make money, which i totally understand, but i was just wondering if he was doing something differently. many japanese denim companies also produce in small numbers but use better denim, etc., and are in this price range. but it will be interesting to see what happens.

sorry if you interpret questioning as anger. im not angry cause i never bought them...i think i got a pair of samurai's instead, which i love.

If you can't see the difference between the ROYs and a pair of Samurai - then good, more capacity for people who like the ROYs. It's like the difference between Tricker's and Church's shoes. One is simply executed at a far higher level, and has more skill and time built into it.

I've seen how the work ROY produces has progressed over the last six or nine months and it's in a different league to the average Japanese factory jean.

Only joshing around earlier.

I am so stoked about these jeans.I was saving for the Roy Narrows, so even if I lose the contest I've still won something with such a cool jean! I also will get to document my 25th year of life with these (plus the 1st few days of my 26th year of life too!).

And to any nay-sayers Roy is a champ.

URCC will suppress all hate by any means necessary.

Was a fan of Roy till he decided to have SE handle his sales/distribution. Not a fan of SE and how Kiya jacked the price up. If I was Roy I would of hired a dedicated sales person to handle his sales and raised the price to justify his pay which I'm sure can be done easily with the volume he is starting to build up over this last year and it still not be as inflated as the new price.

I don't think that you can definitively say that ROY jeans are better made than Samurais, or any other high-end Japanese factory jean for that matter. I own a pair of ROYs and a couple of pairs of Samurais, and when I look them over, I find that there are certain things that are better on the ROYs and certain things that are better on the Samurais. Both are made at an very high level, but one is not clearly better than the other. I think where ROY wins out is if the single craftsman construction element on your jeans is important to you, then that is the brand to get. But to say that ROY's jeans are in a different league construction-wise from Samurai (or Iron Heart or SDA or Flat Head, for example) is inaccurate, IMO.

I'm going to assume that the dedicated salesperson would need to pull $30k to survive. Roy raised prices via SelfEdge to $275 - but is selling the contest jeans for ~$200, so we can assume that's the price point he's realized that he needs to sell at to stay in business. Now, since we don't want hypothetical Solo Roy "jacking up" prices like SelfEdge, so we'll let him go to $220 to cover the overhead of this salesperson.

That means that he only has to sell 1500 pair of jeans per year (at $20 extra per) to afford his dedicated sales team, while making exactly the same amount of money he makes wholesaling to SelfEdge. All in the fantasy world where direct retail doesn't carry any other burdens.

Sounds like an A+ business plan, dude!

Union of ROYalist Communist Consumers. The 30 contestant places have already been decided, sorry... BTW, the contest jeans pricing is a one off special - kind of a 'howdy' from Roy and Cone - doubt it will be repeated on retail jeans.
