I like Guccione because he sort of embodied that stereotype of what a rich sleazy porn theater owner looked like. Even the name is sleazily glamorous.

My first contact with Guccione was with OMNI, a mag I loved.

Sadly in my teenage years I couldn't - or didn't - get hold of his other publications.

My only issue was the vaseline on the camera lens techniques that were waaaay overused by his mag.

Apparently in the early days Guccione had to do his own photography and new nothing of it, so he tried to mimic techniques he knew from painting.

By my teenage years Penthouse was in their hardcore phase, with full penetration, jizz on faces, etc.. Not exactly classy, but better than the Playboy-plus-gyno shots (I don't need to see cervix!) style they went after they dropped the hardcore angle.

Few comments:

  • Al Goldstein's still alive, although last I heard he was having a lot of financial difficulties. I have fond memories of Screw as I was living in Jersey when it was at its peak and the ads/guides to what NYC had to offer were invaluable to my depraved youth.
  • Guccione came after Hefner. He took Playboy and replicated it page by page, only moreso, resulting in the "pubic wars" of the 70's and paving the way for Hustler. I forget which was the first to show pubes, but it was due to the Gooch. I think he opened some Penthouse clubs as well, copying Hefner's Playboy clubs.
  • He ripped me off (indirectly) by accepting my renewal of one his publications after it had gone out of business. I forget which one it was, but despite a few phone calls I never got a refund.
