Club Monaco: Adventures in decent clothing and horrible marketing - Page 91

I know you posted this last month, but I just had this experience.

I wanted a black topcoat and tried on the one from CM (this one: http://www.clubmonaco.com/product/index.jsp?productId=13336701&cp=12243591.12280933.12454393&ab=ln_men_apparel_outerwear).

I hemmed & hawed a bit and wasn't sure, mostly because of the high button stance (a problem CM seems to have in all of its suiting, not sure why).

So I decided to be absolutely sure by checking out the competition. There's a J Crew directly above this CM store, so I hopped up the escalator for an immediate comparison.

CM absolutely destroys J Crew. The J Crew topcoat felt really...shitty quality, like Made in China crapola in comparison. The material was rougher, the cut less elegant, the lining not as great, etc. Keep in mind, CM is also made in China...I'm just comparing the "feel".

I went back downstairs to try the CM one again...which confirmed it was vastly superior. I bought it, and after some tailoring here and there, I like it a lot.

Plus, with the student discount, the CM coat was cheaper to boot.

EDIT: Actually, the CM coat is made in Turkey.

I have a $100 Club Monaco voucher for sale from the Refinery29 promotion at the end of November. I purchased two originally and am content with the two sweaters I was able to get with the first voucher. For those unfamiliar with the terms, it can't be combined with other promotion codes (like the student discount), but can be used for sale items. The voucher expires February 28th, and must be used up all in one transaction. Asking $45.

I'm looking to get some chinos in the Davis fit from CM, amongst other things. A couple of questions: First, what's the difference you between the "slim fit" Davis fit and the Davis fit regular chino, if any? Aren't they both supposed to be slim? Secondly, reading through this thread, I seen a common refrain of sizing two down on the fit of jeans/chinos. Would this be correct for the Davis slim fit do you think? Thirdly, does anyone reckon that after this clearance sale is over --where's there nothing good left IMO-- there'll be additional sales soon? I keep hearing, "Never buy from Club Monaco full retail", so I'm a bit apprehensive about pulling the trigger right now.

Davis is the slim chino line. I wasn't aware of slim fit davis... It's already slim to begin with. I have the kennedy fit and it's not slim as the Davis it's more of a straight cut which is fine with me.

My waist size is 30 and I had to size down to 28x32 on all pants from CM.. Actually Club Monaco is vanity sized as I used to be a Small in all of their shirts, sweaters etc and now I'm a XS.

TO answer your last question, don't worry. Club Monaco always has sales every month. DON"T buy full retail

Just went to their website and noticed a bunch of new suits available. Some S/S linen suits, herringbone, glen plaid, etc. I have very little experience with CM suiting so I have no idea what the overall impression is but thought I'd give a heads up on their new selections. I'd definitely be interested in hearing others thoughts and giving them a try myself if feedback is positive enough.

Has anyone seen the leather gloves in person? Are they nice? How do they fit?

I fell in love with a pair of unlined peccary gloves since last November. They're pretty much fall gloves, and were $250 last November. Last week I was able to cop them for $65 all in, it was marvelous.

I got the small, and it's perfectly fine for me, even though I have longish fingers. And it's very, very soft to the touch. I don't know about their other leathers.

I bought the Amos blue herringbone double-breasted blazer last Monday for $133 + tax, down from $369 retail. While I normally would just avoid CM suiting, it fits great on me and I already had the matching trousers (which I also got on sale). I figure it will be good for the occasional spring or early summer wedding since it's linen. Moral of the story as stated earlier in this thread is never never pay retail on CM stuff.

Here is the Kennedy fit Chino's in blue.

Size 28x32, but I had them hemmed to about 31 1/4 give or take, nothing else. Fit to me is spot on.




Ignore the baggy shirt. I was just outside shoveling snow and I had picked up these pants along with some massimo dutti pants from the tailor so I decided to take some quick shots and left my shirt on

I have a CM suit. It's from several seasons ago but the CM suit in general seems to be defined by a short jacket and rather high button stance. Also slim lapels. Thom Browne inspired though maybe a bit less extreme. Also, the jackets come with working button holes so shortening the sleeves is pretty much out unless you're willing to pay the price of the suit to have them shortened.

I liked my suit when I first got it--fit well, nice color, decent construction for the price--but don't really love it. It's rather 'styled,' so there is a lot to nitpick over. I think it worked well enough for the three parties I mainly recall wearing it too.

I wear the pants (grey) fairly often with a blazer. The pant rise is somewhat high but it looks good.
