Going out in Montreal

I'm in Montreal for the weekend with my friends for a bachelor party and aside from the strip clubs, we're trying to find a good nightlife scene. Our hotel is out of way, near the arena where the Canadians play (Rue de la Montagne), and the bars around here seem built for a 40's singles scene. Someone directed us to a street call Se Le Ronde (sic) and it was a douchey, Ed Hardey-esque, Katy Perry scene.

Are there any neighborhoods or spots that are a bit hipper? More of an artsy, attractive, mid 20's set? Something akin to a good bar in downtown manhattan (ie: not a meat market)

Any tips are much appreciated. I dont know shit about the town (hoods, scenes, etc) so excuse my ignorance.

Try Plateau, old port, The W (hit or miss), Time (haven't been in years so don't know what the crowd is like)... Globe on St. Laurent on Crescent maybe Newtown?

I'll have to check about a few of those. We're def trying to avoid anything clubby. Smaller scale is good.

What neighborhoods are the first few in?

Def check out the spot in the W. Anytime I go to Montreal, that is where I stay.

he just said no clubs... so scratch Time, Globe and Newtown and the W. Those were some of the more up market spots when I used to visit. Could be douchey but sometimes there were cool people and good electronic music. Especially time. But you will most likely like Plateau. That's where a lot of hipsters hang out and the indie kids. Then there's nice lounges and more sophisticated bars in the old port, which is a nice part of town anyway. To montrealers, are there any night spots on Peel now? When I was there last it was only Cavalli which I think may have closed.

The plateau and the old port are neighborhoods. The plateau is probably more your scene than the old port, which tends to be a bit older and more $$ so attracts a blingy crowd. Ave Mont Royal is the main artery on the plateau and you might find something there- there area few places between Saint Laurent and Saint Denis but a higher concentration east of Saint Hubert. I suspect Fuuma would be able to give you names.

Cavalli is still open, but it's something of a meat-market. Food's good.

The plateau sounds exactly what youre looking for. Theres a bunch of places on st. laurent, st. denis, duluth, and mount royal. Its a fairly hip crowd, and a mix of bars, smallish nightclubs with music and cafes. You really can't go wrong with any of them. The places on crescent are more hit or miss, although theres the odd gem like the franco-russian restaurant troika.

Saint denis is good if you can speak french... it's funny to walk by st. sul piece and see 13 year olds get drunk. It isn't my scene though.

I'd def. say plateau. There are even some lounges higher up on St. Laurent that you might think are cool.

Old port is more expensive but I remember there being some nice lounges that play chill music.

Does Hotel Godin still exist? The owners of time/globe/buenna's put together that hotel but I never know if it thrived.

Crescent is a shit show. It's like if you want to have a stereotypical bachelor party... you go straight from Chez Paree (much better than Super Sexe or anything on that part St. Catharine) to Winnie's and get totally trashed with Haitians.

Just avoid Crescent and hit up St Laurent. Good thing about Montreal is half the party is in the street so you don't even need to go inside a bar/club to have a good time.

In the Mile-End, I am a fan of the Baldwin Barmacie. It's on Laurier, near St-Joseph if I recall properly. It's loungy, but people start dancing later on. I haven't been in years though. Some good restaurants around there too.

If you want a fun wine bar, try La buvette chez Simone on Parc or Bouchonné (on Laurier I think).

I like Laurier, day and night.

Plateau sounds good. We want to supplement the sleazy strip club shit with normal bars and regular, attractive cool women. Even if we don't have luck, just to go out and have fun... it'd be good. We might check out the lounge at the W. We're staying near st catherine (or cresent?... not sure, near the Habs stadium) and we're all very much all about hitting up some strip clubs (Wanda's, etc). we went to karma sutra last night and had fun. st. laurent wasnt our scene at all... too young and douchey. we went to this awful place called radio box or something. made me feel ancient.

Montreal is a young city, but that's fun. Not really into going to strip clubs... they're extremely sad desperate places.. but at least Montreal has a lot of them for you.
