Most versatile sweater color?

What is a very basic and easy to match color? I already have navy.

Grey or navy are the most versatile, so since you've already got navy, grey would be the obvious choice. I'd say the darker 'charcoal' grey; the lighter one would be good too but probably slightly less versatile. Personally I'd avoid black, I rarely wear my black sweater since getting grey and navy ones, the latter just always look better. The only time a black sweater looks best is if it's a turtle-neck, but then a turtle-neck is not particularly versatile.

Gray, obviously, but cream is also very versatile. Tan is versatile in the old-manish way.

And I have absolutely no idea why people seem to think that lighter grays aren't as versatile. Anyone want to give the logic of that one? I find that darker sweaters don't go quite as well with darker pants as lighter sweaters do, and lighter sweaters work equally well with light and dark color trousers. And you can use a lighter color sweater to frame a dark shirt, which makes an otherwise difficult item to incorporate into a wardrobe (at least by SF standards) a usable piece.

Grey and blue are definitely safe. I think burgundy and olive green are great for variety if you like a little color.

Just to weigh in on burgundy: I have a burgundy cardigan from Brooks Brothers. It's a great color -- you can only really tell it's burgundy in full sunlight. Personally, if I had to have only three sweaters, I'd go with light/medium gray, then navy, then burgundy, in that order.

I have many, but probably wear the light grey the most. After that it's burgundy, and then Black.
