Macophants - The new Macbook Air: you getting one?

Just saw the new release and it looks slick but significantly overpriced for what's inside. Can't believe they're using the same chips inside the new models that they used in the previous models. So, who's going to be buying one instead of an iPad?

Ibts.

I was thinking of getting one for my grandmother. She needs a new computer, and an iPad would be too weird for her. She just wouldn't be comfortable with it. But for the general populace, I agree the iPad makes this a tougher sell.

I bought one of the older ones when they first were released. Don't see why I'd need this one but also wouldn't suggest them to people who don't need the weight reduction.

Why are Macs so limited in RAM?

huh? i've never heard anyone say that before. I have the most basic iMac available and it has 4 gb of ram which is pretty standard for mid-level computers at the moment. If you're referring specifically to the macbook air, it's probably because they wanted to make it thin and cheap (by mac standards), so performance has to take a backseat. But that being said, I think you can get by with less on a mac because mac os is better at managing memory and preventing memory conflicts than windows. I wouldn't by a mac air, it occupies a weird spot on the marketplace being less covenient than and iPad and less powerful than a basic macbook (I think)

The Macbook Air isn't supposed to be doing things that require more than 4 gigs of memory, really. Get a desktop computer for your bleeding edge video games.

$999 seems like a good deal compared to the old clunker of a Macbook Air at 1399.

Then it seems horribly overpriced compared to an ipad.

Even for Macophants, this thing never caught on. The ratio of Macbook Pros to Macbook Airs that I have observed at university is like 120:1

You can order the new MBA with 4GB of memory.

macbook pros are thin enough. you would have to be seriously space constrained to need an air.

I am thinking about it. I have a desktop and a 15" MBP, and the 15" doesn't get much use - it is unwieldy to travel with and a bit too big even as a couch-surfing machine.

The problem is the HD isn't very big, I'd need dual boot into Windows, and once you get the bigger SSD and 4GB RAM (the RAM it should just have), it isn't all that cheap.
