Tech question: is there a wireless internet worth having?

Since there hasn't been a recent thread on this: is there anything out there as far as wireless internet access that's reasonably fast and stable? I've heard about 4G but can't find any solid feedback thus far. Anyone?

Here in Sweden we have probably the biggest 4G net in the world. Its amazing fast. Around 50mbit, and whit the second phase we will have around 80mbit. Wait until you can get that and you will have a stable and fast wireless net.

I take it you don't mean wireless modem at home?

4G is mobile internet that you'd get from your mobile phone provider. This is different than using a wireless modem at home for WiFi (802.11b/g/n). Which one are you talking about?

well, here's the deal. A colleague has a farm in the sticks, with a land line run to the main house, but nothing run to a standalone apartment. With all the underground stuff they have, they are Highly Reluctant to have someone dig a cable underneath to install, and don't really want poles on their property. Therefore...wireless internet is probably their best bet. But before they jump in on a contract with a carrier, I wanted to know if there was anything out there that wouldn't have them pulling their hair out.

I have a sprint 3g card I use with my work laptop. It's fine for email and VERY light web browsing outside of NYC. It's damn near impossible to use it for anything other than the occasional text only email in Manhattan; so damn slow.

No experience with 4g yet.

Why not get a satelite provider?

That's really dependent on who the carrier is and what their coverage map looks like in that area. As Whitey stated above its really hit and miss depending on where you are. Who are they looking to go with?

A friend's parents live in the sticks and have a satellite provider. It's hit or miss. If the apt in question is close enough to the main house, they might just be able to use a local wifi modem?

Satellite sucks ass. You wont get WiMax out in the sticks so 3G is the only option (if you can even get that, really depends on how far out they are) as far as wireless. Have they checked into Microwave services? They are often only available in rural areas. Its usually transmited from a local mountain to a small antenna on the house and usually really really fast, like faster than cable internet.

4G internet sucks here. When it works. Which is about 1/2 the time according to everyone I know who's tried it.

WiMax is not 4G, and it sucks. Warning, DO NOT GET SPRINT/CLEAR WIMAX. If you download torrents, or even stream video they will throttle your ass back to 28.8k speeds, or even cancel your account. It's a lame, limited/shared bandwidth deal. Trust me, unless you are grandma who checks her emails only once a week, you are going to be incredibly frustrated.

Clear 4G works fine, when I can get a signal. Which is pretty hit or miss in the DFW area.
