I had the original Apple TV, ATV-hacked to play bluray files. Problem was that the chipset was slow as heck. I jumped ship. Went with an Acer Revo with XBMC Live loaded. Plays anything I throw at it without a hiccup. No more file swapping due to limited space on the ATV. All the files are now centralized and ready to play in a moment's notice.

Thinking about getting an Apple TV. I know it will work fine for streaming all of my iTunes related content. Does it also have the functionality to stream things like youtube, music from CDs, streaming audio concerts from websites like NPR All Songs Considered or music band websites?

Yes.. most functions through iTune on another computer via wifi/network. I like mine a lot.

I recently when from two of the old versions to two of the new versions.

I jailbroke them and run XMBC, both are connected to a 1TB media from attached to my airport extreme.

I have not had a cable subscription in about 2 years.
