What can I wear? Ideas? (gender neutral)

Hi there, I'm quite a strange one. An introverted shy person who rarely goes out, and study college from home (online). The only clothes I did wear are PJs since I'm always at home working on freelance projects it was fine. Recently though I've decided to turn over a new leaf and go out a little. I usually wore a T-shirt and pants. Once tried shirts too. None of them fell well on me. I'm not sure if its the fitting or I simply don't look good in men's clothes. Now I need to shop for a new wardrobe... but I don't know what to get. To make things worse there are two main problems for me. One, I need the clothes to look normal, gender neutral. Not overly male, nor feminine. Two, my treadmill broke and I've gained a little weight (143 pounds!!). I'm not sure what to get. I recently switched from wearing PJs to a full-sleeved t-shirt and sports trousers at home. I still don't know what will suit me. Maybe my measurements will help? what size might fit me? I want to wear the top without tucking it in, but I still want to look good. So I'll be shopping tomorrow, all suggestions welcome! SHOPPING LIST ------------------- 1) Top x 2 2) Bottom x 2 3) Belts? 4) Shoes? ------------------- I want to look good, casual, but not cheap. Importantly gender neutral. I basically look like [image removed] (poor webcam sorry). My measurements are: Height: 5'3" Chest: 36" Waist: 35.5" Hips: 36.5" Inseam: 25.5" Sleeve: 24" Please suggest what shoes will look good with your suggestion of clothes? What and what sizes should I get? What should I get? Would I look good in jeans? I have no clue at all. This will be my first baby step to crawl our of my shell and face the world. Thanks a lot in advance!

Everyone can look good in jeans if you find the right fit.

Start there and drop the sweatpants forever. In fact, burn them. Now.

Before you drop all your cash on a new wardrobe, get in shape so your cloths will fit right.

That sweat pants is my indoor clothing, conversion from PJs. Out doors I always just wore normal pants, but I'm not sure it suited me well. Plus I'm not sure what size I should get, pleats? no pleats? so I'm confused there. Jeans is something to look into, I never wore one... so it will be a challenge.

Melo, cute. You are very helpful indeed . However, Mocking me won't change anything, I was talking about clothes not looks. I simply didn't want overly manly clothing. That is all I've meant to convey.

Uncontrol, good suggestion. But I'm pretty sure I'm not a transsexual. If you were talking about my introverted life, well I did go to therapy and now trying to restart life. Before we all judge someone... understand that we all have reasons. I was pretty much disabled (weak muscles) and couldn't walk. Being home schooled and everything, it was inevitable. So, I'll leave it at that.

Everyone else, I look forward to your suggestions to my shopping list. Thanks!

You do not have the body type to dress gender neutral. For the time being get yourself some Levi's 501 jeans in dark blue or something, some sneakers (PF Flyers, Converse, Vans Authentic, something plain and versatile.) and something fairly plain on top. It won't look amazing, but you need to fix your body and get in shape before you think about spending real $ on clothing. If you look around the forum during the few months it'll take you to get in shape, you'll know what's good to wear by the time you're in shape to wear it. edit: Makeshift robot's advice is very good as well.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, I know from experience that depression/shyness/agoraphobia are tough to deal with. To paraphrase Dan Savage though, it really does get better, and good on you for facing your problems.

For clothes, we'd need to know what your budget is and what kind of things you like to wear. A good place to start (especially if you want to stay gender-neutral) would be some fitted t-shirts, one or two pairs of jeans (raw denim, which is worn for a few months without washing and naturally fades over time, is a good option as well), and a pair of canvas sneakers - Keds, Chucks, or Vans laceups. If it gets cold, you could throw on a parka or leather jacket. Just stay away from technical materials (shiny track pants, plastic anything, etc.) and big logos or graphics.

The biggest part of feeling good in your clothes is feeling good in your body, though. You don't have to go to the gym, but some jogging or treadmill a couple times a week, for as long as is comfortable, will really help you feel better and get in shape (not just w/r/t your exterior, but also your cardiovascular system). I don't know what your eating habits are like, but gradually adding more fresh vegetables and whole grains as well as a multivitamin supplement and routine water- or tea-drinking is a great way to feel better.

I hope this helps, and good luck.

Wasn't really trying to mock you, I just didn't understand what you meant by gender neutral, or why. All basics are gender neutral really: jeans, t-shirts (non-graphic), crew/v-neck sweaters, etc. These general categories are all I can really suggest without knowing what you like/your location/your budget, but it sounds like you aren't too sure either. Maybe try Levi's 501 or 514 for jeans? For the rest of those brand doesn't really matter at this stage since you're just trying to establish some basics as you said. Shoes you could go with Chucks, Vans or maybe Adidas Superstar. Clean, basic look.

No pleats.

Jeans is it's own category nowadays. If you want a quick and easy way way to pick jeans, just find a pair of Diesels that you like and fits you from Nordstrom Rack.
