Would you wear a vest?

What do you think of wearing a vest with a sport coat and dress pants? I'm not interested in wearing a vest with a suit as a suit would be overdressed for my workplace. But what about wearing a vest such as this?

I wouldnt do it but I have seen it being done in Polo ads and it looks very nice. An Italian was also seen wearing the same in GQ's pics. You can find the pic in the last 2-3 pages of the non-sartorialist looks thread.

It's a bit weird if you have the satin straps in the back, but I eventually got over it

Yes, I have a black odd vest, which is kinda against SF rules, but I often wear it with a navy suit and I think it looks pretty good. I would certainly wear one like that pictured if I had one like that.

I like the idea a lot, but I think it is hard to pull off. How about a cardigan or knit waistcoat instead/to ease you into it?

Not at all. A vest can be dressed down therefore it wouldn't look overdressed. 3 piece suits can also be mixed and matched. You can wear the vest with an entirely different outfit as well as wearing a suit pant separately.

Love it! Go for it. If not, PM me on the vest, I'll consider taking it. Frankly, I think that vest would make a great casual look with dark jeans and a tweed SC.

I'm 20, I don't work in a formal environment, and just about the only times I'm *required* to dress up is drinking at cocktail lounges, and the occasional "dress-up" presentation at uni. My friends rarely pull out anything other than t-shirts and jeans, and by SF definition, most of my female friends (the majority of my friends) dress either trashy or like hipsters. I also despise being noticeably overdressed for an occasion (and I'm not talking overdressed by MC standards.)
Anyway, I frequently wear the odd waistcoast (black or mid-grey) with a blazer and pants. It frequently works, and usually comes off as smart but relaxed. I think the secret's in keeping the details relaxed and being relaxed yourself, as in many situations.

I have been thinking about a waistcoat as well, but for an odd vest is it better to have a solid plain colour or a pattern to contrast with whatever it is being worn with?

Pattern coat, solid vest; solid coat, pattern or solid vest. So a solid vest will be more versatile.
