Describing what I'm looking for is a bit hard, so I'll see if I can do a good job of it. Yes, I searched, but it's harder to search when you don't know how to describe it. I'm looking for a winter coat. Except I don't want it to be big outerwear meant for snow usage (eg: Columbia). I'm looking for a charcoal or light gray color. Has to have a zipper. It should look nicer than a zip-up sweatshirt/jacket mix, but not so nice as a peacoat/overcoat. I'm really hoping someone here knows what I'm talking about. I'll see if I can scrounge up anything else, but Google images of "zip jackets" is a bit useless.

Looking for wool jacket
So an update: I'm thinking of a wool or mohair jacket. This is the color I was looking for. http://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0...=1164834422000 but more of this style: http://pics.martinandosa.com/is/imag...880_0283_016_f [minus the fact that it's a chick's coat] Any ideas?

I was in a similar spot recently. Looking for a non-bulky wool jacket. Thick and warm, but not bulky. I think you will be hard pressed to find a zip up, from my experience, at least. Possibly something from Woolrich or EG, but not certain. They're of course out there, but difficult to find (again, from own personal experience). I opted for this cheaper alternative, an eBay find. Produced for the Military, but deadstock. Extremely thick and warm, while still not overly bulky. Slim fitting while still allowing a layer or two underneath. I am not thrilled with the non-button down collar, and the lighter shade of olive, but it will get some wear...I Hope. Though again, finding the zip up may be a task. My suggestion is to scour eBay. Woolrich, EG, Pendleton, vintage, etc. And settling for buttons may be something to consider. edit; what size are you? This is something to consider if you're on the smaller side: http://cgi.ebay.com/woolrich-woolen-...item3361995be4 One other option, from Stuart & Wright: http://www.stuartandwright.com/Engin...Hoody_900.html

That first link is almost exactly what I'm looking for (minus the chest pocket if possible). The size is kind of nice (from the measurements) but I'd definitely want to try it on in person when possible. Do you know what stores typically sell Woolrich Woolen Mills?
That second link is a bit too casual.. Looking for something that doesn't have a hood.
Thanks though!

Two suggestions....
1. A fashion-y looking down jacket. Not one of the huge over stuffed designs you typically see, but a designer one with a slim fit and interesting enough details to set it apart from REI-wear. Unfortunately what I'm describing seems to be somewhat rare in the US marketplace, but readily available in Japan. I like some of the FW10 choices in this area from Attachment.

2. A M65 type wool coat. If you hate the formalism of peacoats but want something with similar fabric, these are a good alternative.

Yeah, check out MofM. They typically have lots of great looking jackets every season that have interesting designs which are still tasteful. That jacket Whodini is wearing is just plain boring-- too bland in my opinion.

I have a shades M65 (cotton) It's okay. Boxy and a bit on the short side, quality is acceptable, but not great. I picked it up like two years ago for $60 and feel like it was worth that price but not much more. The wool one is probably sturdier than the cotton one I have, but I wouldn't pay more than $100 or so unless you see it in person.
