Small SUV - Q5, EX, Tiguan, Forester - recommendations? - Page 3

We are looking for a small SUV (though my wife my say she wants a larger one...apparently size does matter) with the upcoming birth of our first child. As of now we are leaning toward the RDX. MDX is still in the running, though lagging behind. I think the smaller SUV makes more sense right now - if we need something larger in a few years then we buy another vehicle then.

GLK: appointments were minimal and, personally, I find it insulting that you have to pay extra for leather seating (same on the BMW). Tech features are lacking. The salesman's only real selling points were "It's a Mercedes" and "Feel how heavy and solid those doors are."

Q5: Have not really looked at. My last car was an A4 and it was nice when it worked.

EX35: Drives pretty nice (I have a G35) but the interior was a bit disappointing. Nothing bad about it, but not totally impressive. Poor gas mileage may be an issue depending on how much you drive. Overall a decent car, but unimpressive. Poor rear storage.

RDX: Decent interior but not particularly luxurious. Quite comfortable and great tech features (voice command system works really well, way better than the RX) Decent kick in the small engine and a bit better MPG. Good rear storage.

RX: Drives nicely and very comfortable interior. Decent storage, bland exterior.

X3: Made it to the dealership just after they had closed. Wife was unimpressed with the vehicle's styling, but maybe we will look again after the new models come out. Based on the pics above, it looks pretty nice.

We have a 2004 A8L with 105k that has had zero problems that weren't our fault (like a spilled soda on the MMI). It looks and drives like new.

I had an A4 2.8 with tons of problems...not catastrophic engine failure, though I did have some major transmission problems early on. Lots of little things too that always cost about $1200 to repair it seems. Obviously, this vehicle didn't have a turbo.

this is because BMW is bringing over the X1

true, but you do have to admit that Audis aren't particularly known for being rock-solid reliable in general. I know BMW's and MB's aren't either nowadays, also.

We are leaning towards the RDX as well. I was quite impressed.

For those who have tested the RDX - what did you think of the ride? Several reviews suggest it's a bit harsh.

Reliability issues do make me wonder about the German marques, especially for new models like the upcoming X3.
