What he said, except for the sex drive part. I've used Propecia on and off for the past 13 years and have never lost the drive. Those who experience the effect report it dissapears after suspending its use. For the past 2 years I have used Finpecia, which is a generic form not sold in the US but available online through unitedpharmacies.com and at a fraction of the cost. I am sure I would have a bowling ball head by now if I hadnt used Propecia.

isn't a hair transplant/plugs a much easier and permanent solution? is it universally known to be ugly and artificial looking or something?

Hair transplant has improved in the past few years so much that after the transplanted area heals it is practically imperceptible. However, it is very expensive, so it's not an alternative to many.

Hair restoration surgeries vary in price depending on how big of an area needs to be restored. What usually happens is that you have the surgery then have to go back for the surgery again at a later date (sometimes even a third or more times) because they can only do so much at once. It costs 5-6 thousand dollars each time. And the doctor will still recommend taking Propecia as a preventative measure for the hair you already have on your head. This is because if you go and have the surgery, say on the front of your head to restore your hairline, over the next few years the hair that was already there will fall out and you will be right back where you started. You'll have the hair that was restored there but the rest will have fallen out. I get my Propecia (a generic called Finpecia) from canadapharmacy.com. It is so much less expensive. I was originally paying $270 for a 3 month supply of Propecia but am now paying something like $60 for a 3 month supply of Finpecia. It's totally worth it.

Just out or curiosity, how can you tell when it is "time" to start taking Propecia? Obviously you want to start taking it as early as possible, but isn't it true that a slightly receding hairline CAN just be a mature hairline and not the start of the balding process?

Basically, when did you guys that are taking Propecia decide that it was time?

A slightly receding hairline is usually accompanied by thinning in the crown and behind the natural hairline. It is usually noticed very early when you cut your hair very short or if you cut it longer, when the drains begin accumulating hair and you're single. I'd say it's never "too early" because I've never heard of a "mature hairline". Even less so when you're just 22-23 y/o. I began losing my hair at 23 and 14 years later I can say I'm almost at the same spot I was when I began using finasteride.

I'm 27 and have noticed my hair starting to fall out and my hairline getting thinner and thinner. For the last 6 months I've been waking up and pillow has hair all over it, the places I regularly sit in my house has hair on the floor and when i take showers and shampoo there is always a bunch of hair that falls out.

My father was bald and his father was also, though there is a full head of hair on all the men on my mother's side. My brother has no signs of hair loss and his hair line is completely different from mine. I've resigned myself to finding a Dr. that does a good job and doesn't cost an arm and a leg within the next 10 years as this is the only permanent solution that I won't have to mess around with anymore after the procedure is done. From what I've seen it looks like it will cost about 5k accounting for the loss I expect within the next couple years and probably more later when it recedes to my crown. It sucks but that's the way the genetic ball bounces.

Thanks for the reply. Here is one of the links where I have read about the mature hairline:

When I go to the website and type "finasteride" in the search I only get Propecia and Proscar as results. Is Finpecia the generic option under one of those?

Sorry, it's Finasteride, not Finpecia that I use. My mistake. It's the same thing though. A generic for Propecia that is not yet available in the US market
