Comprehensive book on Arthurian Legend

Anyone? Looking for something that's very detailed, close to whatever original source material there may be, but has to be prose. Thanks.

John Steinbeck's The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights is worth looking at, as is, I suppose by definition, Steinbeck's source material: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Morte_d'Arthur

I had that in high school is was extremely fun to read. If I understand correctly, Steinbeck takes quite a bit of liberty to adapt the characters and stories to his own interests.

Steinbeck's book is fun, but if you want close to original, it's easy - Mallory, Le Morte d'Arthur - I've got the two-volume Penguin Classic edition.

Mallory is only a partial adaptation of the French Vulgate, where he reinterprets a lot of the original elements. Interesting book nonetheless. If you can find a modern translation, the entire Lancelot-Grail is definitely worth reading. Chrétien de Troyes also wrote some of the best Arthurian stories. It's in verse, but modern translations are available in prose (as long as you stay away from the Everyman edition, it's a poor translation).
