I suspect most people who are knowledgeable about REH are likewise pretty knowledgeable Lovecraftians. Some of the other authors of that circle like Clark Ashton Smith I know much less about.

I recently bonded with a retired physics professor from Bennington College over our mutual affection for HPL. Apparently it was very difficult to find his work in the 1950s and early '60s, until the rediscovery of HPL, Tolkein etc during the pyschedelic era.

I was certainly well aware of HPL in the '50s and early '60s. Collections of his stories were readily available in inexpensive paperback editions back then, certainly before Tolkien hit the big time in the States, anyway.
