I saw Saving Private Ryan
when I was super young--about 13--and I remember being overwhelmed with emotion. The most shocking scene was the landing on the beach. I also watched Deer Hunter
and Apocalypse Now
soon after. If I had to pick one, Apocalypse Now
was the most powerful for me. That movie gets better every time I see it. The deep symbolic meanings, the themes, the character development, they are all top-notch. Read Heart of Darkness
by Joseph Conrad. The movie is very loosely based off of that novella, but comparing them was fun for me when I wrote an essay about the movie.
