Hi all,

Browsing this forum has convinced me I don't know anything about formal wear. Easy on the bashing
ffffuuuu.gif

I randomly walked into "michael andrews bespoke" in NYC today hoping to get something for my wedding "just in time" <-- two weeks. Realized it takes at least 4-6 weeks to get anything serious done. Now I stumbled onto this forum and I'm totally floored. I'm not even sure what a lot of the acronyms mean. Then I read "Manton's guide to wedding attire" and everything became even more hazy.

The fine chap at michael andrews suggested I pick something off Z Zegna or Hugo Boss (budget is 1k-2k) and take it to a tailor. Sounds okay to me.

Does this approach sound right to the fine folks here given the constraints?

Many thanks!

From what I've seen most people think Zegna >>>>> Boss

I've heard of RLPL suits going for within your price range though. What size are you?

@Achilles_: Size: I'm clueless, I'll go to a store tomorrow to get the numbers. I'm 5'11, 170 pounds.
@entrero: Thanks! I'll start studying the thread..

With two weeks out you pretty much have to buy right away and get it to a tailor asap.

Where do you live? If you live in a big city I'm sure some members would have great suggestions of where to go to get the best suit for your money.

I assume you're getting a tux, right? If so, go to Ralph and be done with it. Given your time constraints, you can't wait for sales and shop around. A Polo tux will be in your price range, and will be styled correctly. For all his faults, whatever they may be, RL generally does formalwear well, leaving you not having to worry too much about it.

While you're there, you can get the vest, tie, studs, etc. They will also alter the suit for you.

You don't have enough time to get ThePerfectEveningEnsemble for $1000. As a relative n00b, you don't have the knowledge to punch above your weight via discounters. You could try, but you risk coming up with some grotesque hodge-podge of compromises.

Yes -- I'm aiming to pick up something tomorrow.

Yes, I'm in NYC (moved here recently). Would love suggestions.

Even the suits from Hugo Boss Selection?

I think that line is their highest quality, so it makes it more acceptable here.

Yes, time is not on your side, so stop reading silly articles that will dress you in something that will look like a costume to most people (here I mean the stuff about morning wear...)

Don't take this the wrong way, but since you don't even seem to know your measurements, I am inclined to think that you haven't worn many suits and that the rest of the male guests for your wedding will probably not show up in morning wear. No snark on my part, I don't wear or own many suits.

You say you are 5'11 170, so I am assuming you are somewhere near a size 42R, which means you will at least easily find more things.

This exactly.

I have seen some posts here where the groom and the male guests of honor are in tuxedos, but not all similar rental tuxedos and I find that to be the best look. Of course this assumes your male guests of honor own their own tuxes.... Point is the easy answer is to just all penguin up and be done with it.

Or you can get a perfect fitting med grey suit. Grey is always a nice color, and I think has some traditional ties to weddings. Plus you can wear it after the wedding is over for other events.

But in the end, I hope you are happy with your soon to be wife.

I was going to suggest this, but he seems set on formalwear. Still it seems like a good idea b/c I don't get the impression that the tux will get a lot of use after the wedding. OP, even if your job doesn't ever require a suit, you could wear a medium gray or navy suit to other weddings. And to interviews.

But as a counterpoint to all that, it's his wedding day, and he will want to look as good as possible. It's a special day. If that means the tux gets worn once and thrown into storage, that's not so bad given the hundreds of pictures it will feature in and the occasion it will be used for.

And he'll find a way to use it.
