I think the better, more practical question to ask is - will a thinner strap bear less weight and dig into you if the bag is heavily loaded. It's worth considering.

I mean, it's not just about the width of the strap, but also the overall feel of the bag. Does it look feminine? Then you probably shouldn't use it.

I have a very nice Ghurka satchel with a strap that measure only .5" and I don't believe it to be feminine looking by any stretch of the imagination.
That said, for all I know, it's actually a women's bag but I don't think so.

Overall though, I'd concur with Softy on the issue of weight.
A thinner strap when bearing a heavy load will dig into you shoulder much more aggressively than a strap that is 1" or more.

Most of the shoulder straps on manbags that I have seen in manbag threaks are at least 1" in width if not 2". Only reason I ask is that I just picked a nifty manbag (or so I think) but I am a bit hesitant to rock it cos the shoulder strap is only ~0.7" .

Edit: I should clarify that my manbag has only one strap (which is adjustable) and no handles and the strap is more than long enough for the manbag to be worn across the opposite shoulder as a micro-satchel (measuring only 9"x7.4"x4").

Why don't you post pics of "the manbag" on you? I think the Steve Mono bags, all made for the male audience, also have thin straps.

I also agree with Softy (hello!) re weight bearing.
