Good point.

I didnt' see how it added anything to the story, and was mostly just confusing - did Eli have a penis until he took that bath? Also, it was left out of the original (Swedish) film as well, so it's not like they dumbed it down specifically for the American audience.

They used a female actress even though it's clear in the Swedish version that Eli used to be a boy at some point. Don't you remember te bizarre androgynous genital exposure scene!?

yeah, while I wouldn't go as far as "it's clear", the undressing scene does provide food for thought in the original movie (haven't read the book). Not surprised at all they took it out of the American version (see above)

It still wasn't too clear, and in any event, I don't think it made the movie any better. Just an unnecessary subplot. Romantic awkwardness is endemic to both young boys and young shims.

I think it's significant because Eli perhaps had to turn (or was forced?) to being a "girl" in order to lure young boys into providing for her in order for her to survive.

Think about it, it's far less likely that a young girl would get that close to freaky vampire boys. Oh wait...Twilight...

The first one was not a horror movie at all (like someone already pointed out). My friend said he didn't like the remake nearly as much because they tried to make it a horror, had some cheap looking cgi scenes, etc. I'll eventually end up watching it. are the actors any better? kinda hard to beat Oscar and Eli from the original

I liked the way the re-make made Eli look when she was in "vampire mode" the changes from the old to the new weren't bad at all. The acting in the re-make I thought was incredible. The mannerisms of the kids , everything.

Agreed. It was important in the book and I thought it made the Swedish movie a lot creepier and more interesting to wonder about. It takes the very simplistic vampire girl/boy meets human girl/boy and they fall in "love" motif and turns it on its head in a very uncomfortable way. I thought they did a good job in the Swedish version of making Eli pretty adrogynous, too. Let Me In has some cutesy looking little blonde girl. It's a different movie, so they can definitely take liberties...it just made me wonder about the plot change.

The original was brilliant, one of the best films of 2009. I also liked the book, though it got too OTT.

I'm undecided as to whether I'll watch the re-make, it has got very good reviews, but I am torn between not liking cash ins, and also thinking if a re-make is great and gets more people into film, then that's a good thing.
