I suppose I should've been more specific as there are so many models. Anything like

Well said. This sums up the replica, homage, counterfeit debate perfectly.

As a small time collector of vintage and modern mechanical watches, the owner of dozens of mechanical watches over the years (and bit of a watch snob), I started out wearing fake Subs and fake Tag divers (as a teen) that my dad would buy for me in southeast Asia on business.

They held up fairly well until I tried swimming with them. I never passed them off as real. I figured anybody knowledgeable would know. In fact, having access to cool fake watches in my relatively small Boston suburb actually made me look better than having a 'real' luxury watch (not all that uncommon). I was virtually a crime boss among my peers

I could care less if someone wears a fake, but I just think it's so cheesy to pass off a fake as real when asked. However, nobody ever asks. Nobody but other watch enthusiasts notice the watch on your wrist and they are often the one who can tell the difference.

thanks, I will have a look

Well said and totally agree. Trying to pass a fake is admitting someone cares more about the status symbol than the actual merits of the aesthetic.

Actually after reading an article on timezone about the quality of a well repsected make, maybe fakes should proudly proclaim they are not the real thing.

As some posted already, I don't get why people would buy a fake to pretend to own a Rolex while they obviously don't. Fakes are pathetic. I can understand why somebody would like a specific design, but at least buy something then that doesn't pretend to be something it's not.

Like buying a Parnis Marina Militare if you'd like a Panerai but can't pay the $4k price. Advantage is that the used technique is more solid as well most of the time.

Who here has been given a fake watch as a present without being told the watch is counterfeit? If you have received one as a present, did you wear it?

I was given what looked to be a vintage Hamilton (if I remember correctly-this was 15 years or so ago), by my brother for Christmas. Didn't look quite right visually and the first wear the back popped off and would never snap back on. Pretty much what I expected (both-watch as a gift and what my brother would give).

Its funny I had a friend give me a replica Rolex once. It looks almost perfect and no one would actually be able to tell the difference, yet I still just dont enjoy wearing it because to me its a $100 watch with a Rolex logo on it. If you cant afford the real thing then go buy something else.

Fake watches are like wearing a prosthetic penis when ********** with your girlfriend. Sure she may not be able to tell the difference, but you still know ********* is little.
