That's actually a more insidious problem than it appears, and is a problem with almost all panel speakers in general. It's not only the limited dispersion that screws them, but also the fact that the dispersion varies wildly with frequency: it will have more or less directionality at different frequencies, which is another effect of the physical reason why panels are directional.
Since a speaker's off-axis response (its dispersion or directionality) will affect the perception of its sound in a major way --- lots of
good studies (Speaker M in that study is M-L, BTW) have been done showing that to be the case --- this is a big reason why most panel speakers don't sound very good.
