Good towns near SpringfieldMA /Hartford - recs please!

I am being sent to work at an office near Springfield Ma for a year but I don't mind a commute. I heard Springfield is dangerous and very dumpy...as is Hartford CT.

Is there any place in between the two or somewhere in the nearby area that isn't terribly dangerous/crime-ridden and has at least a few things to do (restaurants other than fast food)?

Cost is not an issue. I know there are nice places north of Springfield but in this case, south of Springfield (between Hartford and Springfield would be ideal).

Hazardville sounds safe.

In all seriousness, I'm working in Hartford until the end of the year and it sucks. Not necessarily run down, but absolutely deserted after 6 and on the weekends; even the Dunkin closes. Post-apocalyptic really. No reason to ever visit IMO.

I think you're going to have a hard time finding anything between Hartford and Springfield. If you don't mind the commute, Amherst/Northampton is definitely going to be your best bet.

This is where I would go as there are many colleges around there.

In my opinion, West Hartford is the best town you are going to find in the general area. Admittedly not directly between Hartford and Springfield, it has the best selection of shopping, restaurants, bars, etc. in the area. It is also a very nice town and has good services, is easily accessible to highways (84 and 91), and has rental stock. I lived there for 3 years and would recommend living near West Hartford center.

+1 one West Hartford in that area but also checkout Northampton, MA. Its north of Springfield. It has a really cool downtown that isn't as yuppie as West Hartford.

I agree. I went to college in Westfield, and worked at a bar in Springfield during college; so I spent a lot of time in that area. Amherst/N.hampton is going to be your best bet; not an urban area by any means, but there is definitely stuff going on. Plus depending on how old you are, the fact there are tons college chicks running around is a plus.

+1 for Northampton/Amherst area. I'm a Massachusetts native transplanted to London, but if memory serves there is beautiful countryside around there, and there are some great restaurants/cafes/bars in the area, and Northampton is a very cool little college town. Amherst has got UMass and Amherst College, so might feel a little bit more overrun with college students, but still has some very nice bits. Northampton seemed to me a bit more chilled.

Those north-of-Hartford towns aren't too hot. I'd commute from West Hartford (or even the West End of Hartford, where there are a very few bars/restaurants) or Northampton.
