Shoes for snowy weather

Hi

Recently moved to upstate NY from Los Angeles.

Need shoes designed for snowy days but are somewhat aesthetically pleasing.

Thanks!

I spent years thinking that what I wore on my feet through the winter didn't matter much...then last year I decided to buy a pair of decent boots and they made a world of difference. The problem with upstate NY is that the weather varies quite a bit, so you deal with a lot of slush (which means wet feet). The way I see it, there are two ways to go: 1. Buy one pair of boots that work for all winter days. This would be something that comes up at least 6" on the ankle, is waterproof, looks good, and is preferably insulated. Your best bet here is most likely something from Red Wing. 2. Buy two pairs of boots; one that's a bit less winter-oriented (maybe Desert Boots and thick socks) for the dry days, and something very purposeful for the storms and slush (Sorels, maybe?). That's my take, anyway.

For winter, you should be looking at boots with a lug sole. Avoid the crepe soles of brands like Red Wing.

While it might not be SF-approved, but check out Timberland. They have enough varieties for you to find that that fit the bill.

Also, get a pair of Sorel for really really snowy days.

OK I'm in Ithaca area. So avoid crepe soles and go for lug soles (whatever they are)?

Any other recommended brands?

1. Bean boots with goretex and thinsulate 2. change at work into some comfy loafers for a real winter like you are about to experience, that is needed. the only other thing which might be close is a shell cordovan boot with waterlock welt and commando sole, but that will be $600 and really isn't a truelly waterproof or warm. you can buy it, but you will still need a bean boot or something similar for shoveling, digging out your car, etc

+1 for insulated bean boots on snowy/wet days but if you're just walking around the city on any normal day any boot should work really

I go to school in western New York and we get pounded by snow...sometimes going for two months where it would snow at least once a day. In these "times of darkness" I swear by my Katahdin boots. Just slather some mink oil on there and you have a great looking pair of beater boots. For their price...they are probably the best shoes I've ever bought. ..I would never bring out my wing & horn x dayton service boots out in the snow...they are too nice. they also feel like they wouldn't hold out as well.

of course sorels are king...but Im not a fan of how they look.

During Moscow winters I am wearing rubber overshoes and simply take them off as soon as I arrive to the office. Mine are by Swims - might be something for you too..
