Shoe Storage

Personally I have a shoe cabinet (from IKEA), but if I decided to store my shoes in boxes, it would DEFINITELY be option B. I am simply not anal enough to take photographs of all my shoes and print them out and trim them such that they would fit in the little picture frame thingy.

I have a shoe rack installed in a portion of my closet.
It keeps my shoes where they are easily seen,
and encourages use.

I don't think a pile of boxes, unless they are made of wood and glass, is going to look so good. I imagine cheap modular furniture when I think of buying 16 of either model box and stacking them four by four or whatever. When I fantasize about shoe storage, which is not something that happens every day, I think of a barrister bookcase built not for books but for shoes. Fourteen inches deep, about eight-nine inches tall, maybe three feet wide. Stack four in a two by two arrangement and aim a light at them and that would be a killer bottom of the closet.

I like to see all my shoes in a glance, so I never store them in boxes.

If I used boxes, B. Otherwise, too much fuss. Rather just have them on a nice rack. A shoe rack that is.

I use racks but have to admit that there is something appealing about neatly organized boxes to keep the dust off of the shoes - particularly the suedes. I'm not sure if I would use something like this, but if I did it would be B. Alternately, if I had a butler who could both organize and photograph my shoes it would be A.

Prefer a shelf cabinet in the closet.

Some boxes are so small that the shoes have to be stored in them lying on the sides (not on the soles). Is it OK to store them like that for a longer time, esp. with the shoe trees inside the shoes? Can the shoes lose shape due to gravity?

If the option B (the one with window) is big enough to fit in stock shoe and short boot boxes, I might consider them.   Sort of right-sizing the shoe boxes so they would fit uniformly inside their dedicated space:

I currently use option A with shelving, because not only do I store most of my dress shoes in boxes, I store them in shoe bags inside the boxes. So option B would not work for me because I still couldn't see my shoes..

I have also found that most shoes come in shoe boxes that are not wide enough to store both shoes on their soles, but rather on opposing sides. I wear an 11.5 D US and it would take a wider than average box to accommodate my shoes resting on their soles. With the shoes laying on their sides most of the view in option B would be obstructed.

As a side note: It may seem rather extreme to store shoes inside of bags that are then stored inside of boxes, but it actually takes very little extra time, and makes the shoes easier to store and find in a larger collection. I could do this with just boxes, but I keep a high shine on my shoes, and since each shoe in the pair has the potential to rub against the other in the box, I protect each shoe with a bag. And, of course, I always put shoe trees in my shoes before I put them away.
