Took An NRA Basic Pistol Course Today... Lots of fun! - Page 2

I used to have a CCW, but where I live now it's impossible to have one, plus I really don't need it. I do have a .38 snub nosed revolver and a Remington shotgun to discourage intruders from coming in and significant others from leaving (joke).

As far as concealment while being elegantly attired goes, I am a fan of the Barami Hip Grip (www.baramihipgrip.com). This system has a shelf extending from the right grip panel that permits a smallish revolver to be worn inside the pants with the grip shelf hooked over the belt or waistband. A virtue of it is that it permits the gun to be worn on any position on the waist--behind the hip, small of back, crossdraw (as when driving). I have them on a couple of my revolvers, but my favorite is a 3-inch square-butt Smith & Wesson Model 36 Chiefs. The hammer spur has been docked, and it has been plated with Robar's NP3. I was experimenting with it under one of my W.W. Chan blazers yesterday evening, and it remained invisible no matter what posture I assumed.

I hadn't shot it for some time, so I took it to the range this afternoon. With Speer 125-grain Gold Dot +Ps, it recoiled rather smartly, but it was far from unbearable, and I fired some decent groups double action at realistic ranges. Although I realize that there are much better options than a .38 +P from a 3-inch barrel, it is still far from contemptible. I just don't trust the reliability of the really miniaturized full-power auto pistols.

I posted pics in the big firearm thread, but I am a fan of Crossbreed's Supertuck IWB for medium sized autos: http://www.crossbreedholsters.com/IW...me,ProductName. I wear mine about 14hrs a day, every day.

I thought the NYPD had gone entirely to 9mm Glocks.

A few years ago, NYPD realized it still had some 3,000 officers carrying .38 Special service revolvers as primary handguns, and that the overwhelming majority of their plus/minus 35,000 sworn personnel carried snub .38s as backup and off-duty guns. They approached Speer to create a load that would optimize .38 Special terminal ballistics when fired from a revolver with a 1.875-inch barrel.

Ernest Durham at Speer led the project, and the result has now become known colloquially as the NYPD load. It comprises a wide-mouthed 135-grain Gold Dot bonded, jacketed hollowpoint at +P velocity.

I'd recommend this:

Also own it in subcompact 9 mm. Great feel, and very good quality.
