Is it no longer acceptable to be proud of your heritage?

What is the connection between losing an accent and not being proud of one's heritage?

Did he also have a really cool Samurai sword?

When I was about seventeen, I dated a girl for a little bit before I realized she was German and had moved to the US from Germany only when she was 13. Even after I found out, I could hear no trace of German accent in her.

There's an Englishman who lives in my town and has lived here for two or three decades. He sounds like he just stepped off the plane.

my general experience is girls are more likely to gain the "local" accent

+1

My father came to Australia from Germany when he was 16. Nearly all of my friends find it impossible to understand him. I'm used to it of course.

My mother came to Australia from Italy when she was 2. No accent of course.

Her sisters were 10 years older than her when they came out, strong accents.

Hell, I moved to Queensland 3 years ago from New South Wales and I thought there was a difference in accents

It's different in LA.
